In 2003, I went to Coast Dental for a standard dental cleaning. A few months after the appointment I started to receive statements from Coast Dental that I owed $85.00. My insurance company (Aetna) sent me a statement that the procedure was not covered under my insurance.
I'm certain my insurance covers routine dental care so I contacted Aetna for an explanation and was advised that Coast Dental had not submitted a claim for routine cleaning but for a total mouth debridement which they do not cover. I thought Coast Dental had made an error as I knew all I had done was a routine cleaning.
I sent Coast Dental a letter a few months ago refuting the charges and did not receive a response to the letter, however, I am continuing to receive statements from them saying I owe this money.
On July 13, 2004, I contacted the Coast Dental office where the services were performed and was advised by their office manager that my file shows that I did receive a total mouth debridement. I explained that I did not nor did anyone inform me that I was being given anything other than a routine dental cleaning. She read from a note in the file which stated I was advised that they were giving me a total mouth debridement, that my insurance did not cover this service and further that I agreed to pay for the services being performed. I explained that no such conversation took place with me nor would I ever have agreed to anything other than a routine dental cleaning.
We reached an impasse. I refuse to pay for a service I did not receive. I will continue to investigate how I may dispute this erroneous billing.

I had a similar experience with their office in Murfreesboro, TN. They overcharged me by $72.00. After three letters to their local office and two to the main office in Florida, they aren't about to correct their error. The only solution is to find another dentist. It's their loss. My wife was scheduled to have $2400.00 worth of work done there, but due to their lack of customer service they lost out on that. The amazing thing is, they really don't seem concerned.

$85 ...these are for cases of negligence

ADA does not get involve in billing disputes. If you have any complaints against any dentist, you should check out the dental board which have a complaint department. But like I said, these are for cases of negligence, (malpractice, etc.) I'm afraid you're just going to have to pay the $85.00 or just refuse to pay risk damaging your credit. Is your credit worth the $85.00?
