I shipped a package insured at $1499 on March 9, 2011 which I spent 2 hours packing myself. It was double boxed and I used about three rolls of tape to securely package it. The UPS driver picked up the package and signed a document stating it was "well packed, contents didn't shift, etc" and everything was fine until the package disappeared off the tracking and UPS declared it was "lost". I filed a claim and sure enough the day the claim was to be issued the package "turned up" (this was almost a month after I shipped it). It was returned me basically destroyed because UPS decided to repack the machine in their own box and inadequate packing material. (read: UPS damaged the package, didn't know what do for a month and played it off as being lost and found.) When it was returned to me I called UPS and they instructed me to drop the package off at the hub so they could do a damage inspection and process my claim. Here is where things get ugly. At this point the package "disappears" again within the UPS network. Because it disappears Crawford and Company decides to deny the claim because it was never scanned into the system. I remind them I have two signed receipts but they rubber stamp it as denied. Melissa Gorman at ext. 6181 was the rep handling my claim who typically doesn't return my voicemails for 3 to 4 days and returns calls always after business hours around usually 7PM our local time (she seems to be afraid of having conversations and hides behind voicemails). After I challanged the denied claim 8 times I decided to send UPS a letter of intent to sue. At this point UPS accused me of stealing the package and started asking me for descriptions of the people working at the hub when I delivered the damaged merchandise to them. I explained to her it was a bit difficult to give a description of a 50 year old man who wears a UPS uniform that I saw for 2 minutes at hub. Needless to say I continued my effort to file a lawsuit and UPS got scared and paid me my $1499 for the damaged system. I am still out $41 in transportation charges they refuse to refund not to mention the 850 minutes I used on my cell phone last month arguing with them. If they sell insurance and refuse to honor it this should be criminal and they should be investigated. I am still contemplating further legal action for their baseless accusations that I stole a package.
