I came into work to a post it note on my computer monitor stating to call "Capital Recoveries" regarding a "legal claim" for a "debt". The note listed a "714" area code phone number and mentioned to contact "Mr Ridick". A case number was also listed.
I called the number and was informed that I was being sued by HSBC for credit card debt from 2006. I did not recall having a credit card with this company, but did remember that I had a car loan through them, which was paid off in full. Mr Ridick explained that I owed $1324 dollars and it had already gone through the legal department and I should be contacted anytime by the LA county attorneys office and also the sheriff to be served with papers.
He then began to read off my whole credit report which he he actually said was good, except for this credit card debt. I then explained I did not know why I had this credit card debt. He was very adiment that it was mine and also stated that I was also going to have to pay the legal fees of Capital Recoveries if it went to civil court.
He said he could recall it from going to the LA county attorney and put a hold on it if I made a payment. He then proceeded to "type" on his computer to put the hold and also to "recall" it going to the sheriff. He then miraculously was able in that instant to lower the amount to $800 dollars if I paid it within 2 days.
I then proceeded to express my dumbfoundedness about the whole thing. I was also wondering how he knew where I worked, since this is a new job I have. (I thought about it...probably from the credit it report). I stated I never received a statement for any of this. He then read the address he had for me with an apartment number. I explained I do not live in an apartment and that is probably why I never received anything. He even agreed with me.
He left the conversation as he would send me a letter to my email address stating what I owed and when it was due (in 2 days). He also said he was on the "east coast" and he needed to leave the office because it was almost 830pm (530 pm west coast).
What I found interesting...is he gave me his direct line..which is the 714 number...which is on the west coast in orange county.
Also, what bothered me is that he gave some of my personal information to my co-worker that took the message. He told this co-worker that I needed to call them back regarding a legal matter to a debt. My coworker was embarassed for me and felt that he was given too much personal information.
Also, I feel I have at least 30 days to respond to a claim..that I feel this is the first time I am learning about? Not 2 days...even after their own admission that they did not have my correct address.
Any comments or help would be appreciated.

The anaheim address.

I sent two letters to them using the address on Orangethorpe in Anaheim, and both of them were signed for by Thomas Morris.
The Michigan Attorney General, who I contacted about them, sent them two letters also, and reported back to me that the letters were returned as they weren't at that address. Easy enough, they refuse what they want.
So, in essence, they refuse anything that is legally threatening to them, such as correspondence from a Government agency. Like I said, they signed for both of mine, and I haven't heard from them in over a year.
They get sued all the time for FDCPA violations, and lose everytime. They get so frustrated when you call their bluff. It's awesome.
Their phones are registed to ACM Group, which is Asset Capital Management Group. ACM group is the company that pinged my credit before they started playing games with me. From what I know, ACM group is owned by United Financial Partners. They also go by Bureau of Debt Management, Capitol Recoveries inc., and Credit Recoveries inc.
I'd sue them, but the return for my time isn't worth it for a $1k judgement. I may give all my info to an attorney, have him sue them and let him keep the judgement.

Same Issue another new company name

I received a phone call at work from these people stating almost exactly the same thing as the original poster. They told me they would sue me first and when I asked about validation they refused to give it to me stating "it's not my problem" and i would have to contact the original creditor to get validation.
I asked them for the date of last payment at least and they gave that to me. It was over 5 years old so I told them, even if it was my debt (which i doubt as i've had my identity stolen a couple of times in the past) the statute of limitations has passed. The man who identified himself as "Mr Terry" then told me they would file a 1099c with the IRS.
He was extremely rude to me, degrading me over and over again.
I asked him not to call me at work anymore and requested they send me information by mail. He informed me they already had and it was to late for that. I told him I hadn't received anything from them and again requested information. Eventually he hung up on me.
I called back several times to try to get them to send me information and asked for their mailing address so I could send them a formal request. Every person I spoke with refused to give me their mailing address. One person gave me a fake address (i followed up with a search). Someone finally gave me a business name, he said it was "United Financial Partners and Associates but again refused to give me an address transferring me back to Mr Terry again who again degraded me and hung up.
i checked out the business name and the only thing I can find that is remotely close to a collector is a different post here on Ripoff Report. I believe this is the same company.
I wrote down everything that was said to me during these several conversations if anyone is interested.
Can anyone verify their real mailing address? I want to send them a Cease and Desist letter but I don't know who to send it to. What other options are there?

I just had the same company do the same to me today. Almost caught me off guard but they would only give me 24 hours to come up with the money. They also sent me an email and put all on hold until noon tomorrow. I knew enough that by law they have to give you 30 days. They said they had been trying to serve me court papers at my California address that I haven't lived at for 2 years. They also had my new address out of California and I NEVER received anything from this company. They gave me alot of my ex-husbands information trying to link property with him that I don't have and also his brother. I thought this was weird and started doing some checking and found this report. I felt like I was reading my story. They are not getting a dime from me....

#1 Consumer Suggestion
Don't deal with them. They are extremely sketchy.

I've dealt with these people. They are sketchy to say the least. They won't sue you, so don't worry about that. It's kinda sad, but I've devoted a good chunk of time to tell others not to play games with them. They are bottom feeders, and play manipulative games to sucker you into giving them money. They've been sued numerous times, even by the Attorney General of Virginia for $1 million. Do a google search on it.
You have more than 2 days. That is one of their games. Read up on the FDCPA. They don't follow it, but it's law. You can sue them if you want to devote the time to doing so. They disclosed personal info to a 3rd party. Big no-no. Send them a letter demanding validation of the debt. I've sent them 3, and they won't even respond. They will threaten to sue you all day long, but never will. They are weak.
They give a different name to everybody they call. Bureau of Asset management, Collection Recoveries inc, Capitol Recoveries inc., Bureau of Debt Management, ACM group, Asset and Capitol management, and whatever else they come up with.
Thomas Morris, or Tom Morris, or Tommy Morris is their "legal administrator". He's not an attorney. He's bullyish, but backs down when confronted. Or he will hang up. Challenge him. He hates it.
As always, I will give the numbers they operate under. Please reply back with the number that they gave you so I can update them. Do not, under any circumstances, set up any type of payment arrangements with them.
