My wife has had a DMB MasterCard for many years now. She has never ever missed a payment, been late or gone over limit. She uses the card here and there for small purchaces and our car insurance premiums every 6 months. She makes much larger than required payments each month to cut down the balance on this card also.
Over the past few months from July through October DMB has increased her APR from 17.99% up to 24.57% on purchaces. The cash advance APR has gone up to 29.57%. I had her call DMB customer service today to complain and find out why. They told her it was because the "prime rate" had gone up each of the past 2 months. I looked up the "prime rate" and they were right it had gone up twice over the past 2 months, by .5%, lol. A whole 1/2 of a percent. Since when does 1/2 a percent justify APR increases of over 6% over a 3 month period? They did review her credit and since she is in perfect standing with them they dropped her APR by 2% down to 22.99%.
Luckily we are in a position to pay this card off within a few months and thats exactly what we are going to do.
Our FICO scores have been continually rising from year to year and we are both currently in the 680 - 700 range. So I think DMB is soaking it's customers and would not recommend them to anyone.
I have been told that it's not a good idea to close credit card accounts because it can drop your FICO score. Is there any truth to this?

Direct Merchants Bank....Long history of rip offs!

I too have a Direct Merchants Bank credit card. I've had this account for a very long time (back when it was Fingerhut). I also have been victim to the APR and excess fee game that they play. They consistently charge high fees no matter if you are in good standing or not. Their CSR's are coached to give the unsuspecting person the best excuses for raising the fees. The CSR's are rude and condescending. I've been making on time, more than minimum payments for quite some time. I was fortunate enough to pay them off this month. I sent in 2 payments, a larger amount by mail was sent first. A smaller amount was paid using their website payment option. The due date was 12/4/05. Small payment posted 12/2 and the other one was conviently posted to my account on 12/5, one day after the due date. I just received a statement from them stating that I had an almost $100 balance. They charged me another whole month of finance charge. I am now disputing this with them. The first response was one of those "pre-written" responses telling me when to mail my payment or pay online. Very rude and unneccessary! It seems like over the years, I've had to constantly fight with them about fees. I reminded them of that, along with their lack of best business practices. BEWARE! DON'T USE THEM! EVER!!

I noticed today after viewing my bill DMB for some strange reason jumped my rate up to 89.56% for cash advance. I am about to give them a call and hopefully this charge is a mistake. I never ever seen an intrest rate this high in my entire life. I am in the process of digging through old bills to check and see when this actually started.

I have had this card for many years, and suddenly i got this same crazy APR increase. I have never been late or missed a payment. I used the card only for a few special things and this has made me so angry to be treated this way. I will cancel this card since I'm lucky to have a zero bal at the time this has happen. Dont fret about the score it will only drop a few points and worth it. Think of what will happen later fighting the debt this outrageous rate will cause on your score.
