I took the discovery cruise from Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas. This was one of my worst experiences. I ship should not have left the port that morning. The east coast was experiencing colder than usually temperatures and we experienced very rough seas. The captain made a big mistake when he decided to leave. More than half of the ship was physically sick and vomiting. Children and adults were lying on the floor very sick. The crewmembers were not helpful and they left passengers on the floor instead of tending to them. This could be because they don't speak English.

A lot of people got ripped off that day. Many paid over $150 for good entertainment and food. The entertainment was boring and no one was well enough to eat. Avoid this cruise, it ruined my vacation!

This was not the first cruise I have taken. Discovery offers the cruise as either a one-day cruise or you could stay aboard a few days. I would have cancelled if I were notified by their personal.

At no time were we told we could cancel, contrary to what their representatives say. The Discovery Cruise is definitely not a large cruise liner; Ive been on a large cruise liner before. The captain did make a mistake by sailing that morning, since his decision cause more than half of the ship to be physically ill.

I think you would be a little aggravated if you paid over $150 for bad entertainment, crappy food and horrible customer service. From around 9:30 to 1:00 I spent my time in the ships hospital with a doctor and crewmembers I had an apparent language barrier with.

Not only was I tending to my sister and friend, I had to notify the doctor that others needed care. I also find it amazing that the hospital decided to leave a very sick pregnant women on the floor, while her husband was constantly vomiting in the next room. I really dont think you should be defending this company unless you have been aboard its ship. Its looks nothing like whats advertised on the website and the smell, even before people became sick, is indescribable.

Response to Clifford

I think your comment is not only irrelevant but also ridiculous. I couldnt care less if you were in the Navy; I guess thats your biggest accomplishment. Congrats! I considered the seas rough that day because no one could walk without stumbling or falling over. When people book a cruise for the day or longer they expect to have a good time. It is true that we cannot help the weather, however this cruise line was not prepared for any type of emergency. You really shouldnt be defending this company unless you have been aboard its rundown ship. I have been on one-day cruises before and Discovery cant compare.

The ocean is not always nice and smooth

AUTHOR: Clifford - (U.S.A.)

Just because you got sea sick does not mean the cruise was unsafe or that the ship should not have left port. I'm certain that not everyone was sick.

I LOVE to be at sea when it's rough, the rougher the better. I was in the Navy on a ship for 5 years and even rode out a hurricane. I loved every minute of it. Your definition of too rough was probably different from a veteran seaman. I would say that if you have a propensity for seasickness or fear of rough water that you stick to cruises in rivers or small lakes where it's always smooth.

You could have stayed in port or took any number of seasickness remedies. you need to accept responsibility for yourself.

How is the ship line responsible for Mother Nature? You still decided to go, you could have cancelled.

AUTHOR: Edward - (U.S.A.)

Just a few questions for the poster. Was this the first cruise that you had taken? Was this just a one day cruise? In your post, you wrote that the east coast was experiencing colder than normal temps. You could have cancelled but you decided to go ahead with it. The sea may have been choppy, but a large cruise liner is safe in the water unless it maybe runs into a hurricane. Writing that the captain made a big mistake is silly. I think the Captain is more qualified to make that decision, not you.

If it was really unsafe, wouldn't the Coast Guard have stopped the cruise? I really do not think that the Discovery Cruise lines would have put the safety of all of the passengers and their ship at risk if the voyage was going to be unsafe.

What resolve are you looking for? A complete refund? It seems obvious that you are demanding money. From your attack on Anthony comments, and your comments about their customer service, it is obvious that you only want money, not an apology. I think that if you can show how they are responsible for conditions caused by mother nature, than they should give it to you. They were going to go on the cruise with or without you. You already knew the weather conditions but you still decided to go.

Maybe I will try using this strategy on the next plane flight I have to take. Demand a refund if we run into air turbulence, the pilot should have known better and stayed at the airport.

Thank you, Anthony for your well written preconceived response to my complaint. Im sure you provide a similar letter to each passenger that disagrees with your companys credibility. I have contacted your customer service and they are also uncooperative. Your company is reluctant to resolve this situation and I hope I have warned some people of your unprofessional behavior.

Discovery Cruise Line Response

AUTHOR: Anthony Parker - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, January 11, 2008

Discovery Cruise Line sails daily from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Bahama Island carrying over 200,000 guests per year. We take pride in the fact that many customers return again and again to enjoy our Bahamas Day Cruise and Grand Bahama Vacations. Discovery provides continuous, safe and reliable service and by no means would sail in unsafe weather conditions. When seas are choppy, some guests may experience motion sickness and for this reason we do advise passengers prior to boarding that if they do not wish to sail due to the high seas, they may re-schedule or cancel their cruise at no additional cost. In addition we do offer motion sickness tablets at no charge. We have an international team of hosts and entertainers and all crew do in fact speak English, albeit some with a slight accent.

We are sorry to hear that Jaime did not enjoy her trip and ask that she kindly contact our customer service department in order to resolve her issue.
