This site was recommended by another freelancer and I took up some jobs on the site for which got reviews of 10/10. I had chosen to get the payments at the month end and before the first pay date, an email was sent by a RAC staff to all my buyers that my account was duplicate.

Upon inquiring, I was informed that RAC found me to be holding a duplicate id and the name that they gave me belonged a person who happened to use my laptop for some time. I was not given any proof on the links and told that I would have to close my account. When asked about my pending payments, they informed that I will get that once I finish all the open works after which my account would be closed.

Once I completed all the work, they sent an email that they wont be paying me all the money as it was used to recover some cancellation amount from a linked account. They also said they sent the remaining 40 odd dollars after that to the other account, which I have no way of verifying.

I have a few questions for which I didnt get the answers during my email conversations with RAC employees:

- If they are not sharing how they identify duplicate account holders, atleast they should look at the proof I am giving to prove my innocence.

- If they do all paypal validations, why cant they recover their cancellation fees from that person's account?

- After all this, RAC says they are paying me $40 something, then they should pay it to my account. Then why pay to the other account where I have no means of verifying?

- If they can send my money to the other paypal account, why cant they recover their cancellation fees from that paypal?

I feel I have been victimized here. I didn't even get a satisfactory answer from the RAC staff and they just keep on repeating the same predefined messages along with links to the RAC agreement. My account has been suspended and I have no way of recovering my money.

I feel whatever happened to me was incorrect and I was not given good enough reasons for that. And end of the day, I lost all the money which I deserve for my hard work.

Response regarding your account

AUTHOR: Rodsmithrac - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 06, 2010

This is Rod Smith from Rent A Coder. I wanted to respond to your posting about your account. Without your specific account information I cannot give any specific information so I will respond in general terms.

Rent A Coder does not allow users to create more than 1 account on the site, as explained in the buyer/seller legal agreement. One reason that we do not allow more than 1 account is because creating a new account does not allow other users to see your history and previous ratings on the site. If we allowed users to do this, they could escape previous poor ratings and a bad account and start over. This would defeat the purpose of the rating and arbitration system. Keep in mind that we also limit a users activity on the site if they lose 25% or more of the projects started. If we allowed users to create more than 1 account they could get around that and continue working on the site when they are not performing at an acceptable level.

Rent A Coder has various ways of reviewing accounts to determine if the user has been on the site before. We dont use IP addresses as a sole means of detecting this. Before making a decision that accounts are linked, we gather information to make sure the accounts are linked. In your situation you allege that the name of the other account belonged to a person who used your laptop. I assume you are alleging that we used that to detect the linked accounts; however that is not something we would be able to do. However I cannot speak about the specific information we used without reviewing the accounts.

The buyer/seller legal agreement explains the possible penalties for duplicate accounts:

______________________________________

Duplicate Accounts. The anonymous nature of the Internet makes it possible for a seller who has had their account involuntarily terminated (or who received unfavorable ratings on that account) to create another account on the site and resume transacting business on the site, against the will of Exhedra. Exhedra regularly monitors site profiles for this sort of action, and should the Seller be determined by Exhedra to have done this, they will forfeit the balance of all of their accounts, and all funds will be returned back to the original buyer, minus the Exhedra fee. Seller agrees that Exhedra may use any means necessary to recoup previous payments sent on the duplicate account, including but not limited to a stop payment, Paypal/Western Union cancellation, or a collection agency. Additionally, the account will be closed. Seller further agrees that Exhedra may (at its option) withhold all or part of Seller's available funds as either a permanent penalty fee (to be kept by Exhedra) and/or as a "good behavior bond" for a certain period of time, to prevent them from opening another duplicate account.

Friends, family members and/or business associates are not allowed to create or transfer ownership of accounts to attempt to circumvent this rule, and all Sellers agree that if they are determined by Exhedra to be participating in such a scheme, all accounts will be treated as duplicate accounts, per the above rules. Occasionally, a previously banned user approaches another legitimate Seller about 'sharing' their legitimate account. Exhedra strongly advises Sellers from participating in this sort of scheme. Sellers whom Exhedra determines have colluded with an illegitimate user will be considered illegitimate themselves and treated in the same terms as detailed above.

______________________________________

Once again I will say I cannot speak about the specific situation because I dont have any of that information, however based on what you stated; it seems you were responsible for some fees (which is explained in the information from the buyer/seller agreement).

You mentioned that you had a few questions:

- If they are not sharing how they identify duplicate account holders, atleast they should look at the proof I am giving to prove my innocence.

Response- I cannot say much about the specific situation because I do not have your information, however we do take the explanation into consideration. As I mentioned before, we use various pieces of information to determine if an account is linked, so I am not sure how your explanation would prove you did not have more than 1 account.

- If they do all paypal validations, why cant they recover their cancellation fees from that person's account?

Response-I am not quite sure what you mean by this statement. We do verify the users who make payments to us. We do this as a way to eliminate fraudulent payments. We do not verify accounts that we make payments to. Once a payment is sent out we cannot retrieve the funds through PayPal. We can only access funds that are in the Rent A Coder account.

- After all this, RAC says they are paying me $40 something, then they should pay it to my account. Then why pay to the other account where I have no means of verifying?

Response- I am not sure how the payment was made in this situation because I dont have your specific information. If if the accounts were linked the funds may have been moved to the master account and then dispersed.

- If they can send my money to the other paypal account, why cant they recover their cancellation fees from that paypal?

Response-We cannot recover any type of fees from a user unless the funds are in the Rent A Coder account. In this case the accounts were linked so whoever used the accounts is responsible for the fees, whether it 1 person or 2 people who shared an account.

Unfortunately we cannot give you the specific information we used to link the accounts. The only way you can receive this information is through a subpoena. If we let all the users know what methods we use to detect duplicate accounts it would allow people to bypass the system and create more than 1 account.

If you would like to contact me or someone at Rent A Coder for more specific information (where the funds were sent, what the status is on the accounts, etc) we will be able to assist you.

Rod Smith
