Fcnb, Fcnb-midland how the past comes back to haunt you Oaks Pennsylvania

I had an account with FCNB - Newport News that was paid off via collection agency in August of 2002. I did get a release letter from them. In 03 I received a letter from another collection agency saying the account hasn't been paid. I told them I had paid and they looked and said yes it has so their wasn't anymore contact with that agency. So Imagine my suprise this month August 2008 when I receive a letter from Midland saying I owe. I just couldn't believe it.

I called the people at Midland and spoke with Claire who has to be one of the rudest people I have come across and of course she wasn't any help. I pulled a credit report and it shows that Midland has pulled a report on me. FCNB and the other 2 collection agencies are not showing on my report. Why would they do that? And how do I get this taken care of once and for all?
