I purchased a new car in 2004, and ended up 2 payments behind during a job loss, I got a new job right away and the week of my firt paycheck, Fifth thrid bank caled me at work.

The day I got paid, I gave them permission to take the payments I was behind on out of my bank account. I was told on the phone that that was all they would need for me to do, and that my vehicle wasn't in danger of being reposessed.

I picked up my newborn after work and went home. I wasn't even home 30 minutes and a tow-truck pulled up. I didn't think anything of it and a man came up and knocked on my door. He told me he was sent by fifth thrid bank to repo my car.

I told the man that I had taken care of everything that day and it wasn't supposed to get reposessed. He said, "ok, I'll call them and make sure."

He came back to my door 10 minutes later and said that they told him to take the car, so I call fifth third and they tell me that I will have to pay $100 towing fee plus a $1,000 storage fee to get my car back, which is still sitting in my driveway while I'm talking to them.

I ask to speak with a supervisor and the representitive hangs up on me after informing me that a supervisor won't be speaking to me.

I call back and finally get ahold of a supervisor and she tells me that after they order for a car to be reposessed you can't get it back without paying the fees.

I didn't have the money to get my car back out and I let it go to auction and be sold. They never let me know how much they sold it for or even tried to contact me again until 2008.

I had moved to a new house 6 months before they contact me. They tell me that the original amount that I would have owed back in 2005 would have been $500 but since I didn't pay on something that I didn't even know that I still owed anything on, I owe them $7,000

I asked the attorney why it would be such a large amount and she informs me that it is due to late fees. I don't see how i could accumulate $6,500 in late fees on something that I didn't even know that I owed. I have tried to work out some kind of arrangement but they want me to pay over $500 a month with a $1,500 down payment. I am going to school and the school requirement is that you are not allowed to work more than 20 hours in a week. I explained this to them and they said that they would just take me to court and make me pay.

I also asked them why they didn't get ahold of me earlier and they said it is not thier responsibility to get ahold of me about my debt.
I don't know what to do at this point.
