I just up graded to a 16 seer central air conditioner, and was promised a $400.dollar "instant rebate", along with a tax deduction of $1000. dollars. It turns out that the advertised "instant rebate" is given directly to the merchant, not to me. If the "instant rebate" is given to the merchant
instead of the consumer (me) it leaves the merchant free to charge however much money he likes and receive the $400.00 dollar rebate too.

I live in Florida and bought a new A/C system. At the time, there were FPL rebates offered. My A/C company quoted me their price and then deducted the rebate from the price. I thought this was very fair since I was able to see what his price was before the rebate. It also left him to wait to receive the rebate instead of me waiting for it.
