MY REVIEW

Shawn D Byrne / Fox Pools and Patios / STS Pools & Landscaping / Legendary Design Landscaping is all about scamming customers. My advice will be to avoid him like the plague. If a contractor is incompetent or lacks intelligence and skills and cannot deliver the exact product or quality, one can possibly understand and live with it. In the case of Shawn Byrne, it is not that. When he takes up a project, his intention is to screw it up deliberately, start an altercation with the customer, and disappear with customer’s deposit. The profit he would make after 1 month of work, he easily makes it in 1 week by running away with your deposit and delivering nothing. This also allows him to take up another project and scam another customer sooner. This is his modus operandi and he does this for a living.

He will come multiple times to your house, be extra friendly to you and your pets, will also bring his children along with him and create that extra trust, make fancy designs and show nice renditions on his computer, low ball the price by 40% compared to other contractors and push you to sign a 1 page contract which has a fake contract no., fake address and ask you to write him a check on his personal name. He will claim to have applied for the permits (which of course he never does) with the city, bring a small crew who look like they have never done any construction/remodeling work before and are simply recruited on a daily wage, not have the required tools and start work without a plan. Again, all this is done to simply screw up the job and make away with your deposit. This is his plan.

In my case, we were building a small deck area with concrete benches and an outdoor kitchen. I actually drew the whole layout for him on the concrete Patio and lawn area (with marking paint) and wrote down exact dimensions on the ground. He still did it wrong. Wrong dimensions, shape, level, finish, there was nothing that was right.

His first job was to pour a concrete footing for the outdoor kitchen, benches in the deck area and stone edging for my flower/tree bed.

• The Deck area was completed ruined, the concrete had been poured unevenly at the base and on the sides, the dimensions were completely wrong and the whole deck area was unusable. He even had plywood stuck in between bench and step which became a permanent part. I had to pay another vendor to break and haul away the concrete.
• The footer for the retaining wall was above the ground, not leveled at all with the grade, had wrong dimensions from the wall/fence, thereby destroying that part of my yard permanently. I was unable to work my sprinkler system in this area as the dirt dug up by Shawn was sitting on top of the sprinklers forever. I had to pay another vendor to break the concrete footing and haul it away along with the dirt and get my sprinkler system operational again
• The footer for the kitchen island had wrong dimensions. He buried my drip system under the concrete which was very careless, the concrete had not been finished cleanly and there were still wooden stakes broken inside the ground and the whole area that was dug up collected rain water became a mess.
• Shawn Byrne lied to us about applying for permits which was confirmed by the city (to us) later. Even when I caught him, he continued to lie, saying the city is working on it, height of shamelessness.
• He was callous about my property and things. I had concrete splattered all over my yard which he never took care of
• I had concrete splattered on my gutter pipes and back brick wall and AC units. I had wood stain dropped on my newly laid concrete pad (that I got poured before employing Shawn’s services) and grass. All this resulted in permanent damage to property
• Out of the $2800 paid as initial deposit, He had charged $1500 towards concrete work that was all done wrong and was therefore unusable. Even considering the $1500, he made away with $1300 for which no services were provided by Shawn at all, in other words, he stole the money from us and disappeared

The only thing that I was able to retain was a box full of his old and broken tools which was junk. I just gave it away for free to the guys who hauled away all the concrete and cleaned my yard.

Considering the whole project was worth 20k, I am glad I split that up into smaller jobs and gave him less deposit initially, else, it would have resulted in a bigger hole in my pocket. I know others who lost a lot more. He even scammed a widow of a fallen soldier, I wonder, how low could one really stoop to do something like this
