In August 2011 I signed up for freescore.com to obtain my 3 credit scores. I received 3 numbers that claimed to be my credit scores from each of the 3 credit reporting agencies. I thought they looked a little low, and thought that maybe the new financial regulations changed the way they are calculated. However, a week or so later, still in August 2011, I applied for a mortgage through my bank. My 3 actual scores were nowhere near the scores reported by freescore.com. They were significantly higher. In fact my lowest actual score was about 100 points higher than the lowest score reported to me by freescore.com that same month. I called freescore.com to cancel my membership and obtain a refund for the fee I was charged. The customer service rep, Amber, cancelled my membership. I told her I want a refund because they were providing bogus credit scores. She replied that the scores they obtain were from Transunion. I told her there was no way those scores came from any reporting agency, because I have my actual scores from my bank. I also told her that I knew what they were doing. They were getting the actual credit reports, but then using their own (incorrect) formula to calculate their "credit score". She insisted that was not occuring, but she didn't know why my real credit scores were different. She told me that I would need to speak to a manager to get a refund. She put me through to a manager (I didn't catch her name). When I explained to the manager the reason I wanted a refund, she replied, "Oh yes, we use a different scale" and promptly issued my refund. So there you have it. Freescore.com does not give you your actual credit scores at all. They give you bogus scores they calculate off of the actual credit report, and they use a different "scale" in their calculation than the credit reporting agencies use.
