Have a laptop that is still under the extended warranty. OS went bad so I reinstalled the OS. Upon rebooting... I received an error..."hard drive may have developed bad clusters."

I fdisked and reformatted. The bad clusters seemed to have gone away..but upon running scandisk, the bad clusters returned. I phone GE-Zurich and they had me fdisk and format. No bad sectors were found during the format so I told the support person that I should run scandisk first and then format.

During scandisk bad clusters were found. After the format 1.38MB in bad sectors were reported. The support person informed me that after 2 formats of the hard drive, if the size in bad sectors increase then they would replace the hard drive.

He had me do another format without running scandisk first. The amount of space in bad sectors did not change. I told him they would change after running scandisk. He told me to do it and to call back when that was done.

After running scandisk I called back. I was told, because the previous tech. had closed the case, I would have to start all over.

Started over. Ran scandisk and then format. The tech on the phone took the information and checked with "tier 3." Came back and said because the previous call stated that the amount of bad sector space did not increase, that my hard drive was good.

I explained that it increased after running scandisk and reformatting. He said it didn't matter...the hard drive is good because the previous call stated so. I asked to speak with his supervisor and he gave me a # to customer relations.

I called the number and recieved beeps similiar to that of a fax...no personel answered.

After reading all other complaint about this company I am not even sure I want to send this laptop to the company. I fear it will return in worse condition than it is.

Okay...now that I have time. I called back again...the technician wanted to go through the same steps again. I explained the situation and he told me to write a letter and fax it in. I did this and four days later recieved a call. They have shipped a box for the laptop...it has been sent. I am worried!!! Will the laptop come back in one piece? Will the display be cracked? Will they actually replace the bad hard drive or just Fdisk and reformat??? (Which will only be a temporary fix as long as no one runs scandisk.) I can't wait to find out.

Alex,

Yes, over time is MAY get worse. And yes, the number you called is setup for data fax's.

If you want to contact customer relations, fax that number with your complaint and have your incident number included. The customer relations department will assign an agent to you and that agent will then call you.

I suggest calling back in and trying again regardless of previous notes saying it's good. If you ask for a supervisor, they are to either set you up for a 24-48 hour call back OR if a supervisor is available, they will get on the phone. Customer relations is second level -- if you want to talk to someone above 'a supervisor'.

As I said, call back in -- your issue can be further processed (based on what you have said).
