Geek tech toolbox was first on the list of computer repair sites. It was advertised as 29.95 to scan your computer for problems. I didn't notice below it also charged me 9.95 to talk to a tech. Then I had to call a number to get my account started. I talked to a tech named "david" who seemed extremely nice. He took over my computer and brought up a lot of exclamation points and warnings. My computer was ready to crash. For $199.99 they could fix it like new. I told them I could not possibly afford that right now. He told me not to worry, that 19.95 would be taken out of my acct monthly to make it easier for me. I agreed.
This morning my bank called me. They wanted to be sure I hadn't been scammed, they've had a lot of people call about other computer repair sites, that do the same thing. I told them I did not authorize 199.99 taken out of my account, I was extremely upset. They put a hold on that amount. I called geek tech toolbox and talked to a foreign person that I could not understand well.
He said; $180.00 was charged to my account, plus the first payment of 19.95 for my first months payment. Gee, seems to me that's the entire amount. What was with the 19.95??? first payment?
He then sent me to his supervisor who promised to return the entire amount immediately and that I would receive an email regarding the refund. I said many times during the conversation that I was on social security and could not possibly afford that amount. I said I thought it was a scam. He got angry and said would a scam refund your entire amount?
Why would a legitimate business do something like this. This happened 1-10-2014.
So far, I have not received an email from safecart (I suppose their business rep) or geek tech toolbox or any indication that I would have my money refunded.
The customer service rep at my bank assured me that geek tech toolbox has no intention of refunding the money to me.
I had to cancel my card and will have to wait for a new one.

Geek Tech - ripoff or scam??

I just wanted to state that I had a similar if not identical problem to the one above. I thought I was buying a computer cleaning tool for about $30, but ended up paying $40. In addition, I thought they would just send me a registration number, instead, they asked me to call a 1-800 number and I had to wait for, and talk to a technician, who asked me to let him take control of my computer. When I asked why this was necessary, he told me that this was standard practice. I was too tired to argue, so I just let him do it.
Besides avoiding my questions about why all this was necessary, he proceeded to start analyzing my computer and act as if my computer was hosed and was totally ready to crash and burn (I really was only trying to speed it up, not fix a problem). At this point, I had not even run their software (which I purchased), so I had not had a chance to remove any of the registry problems.
Then he wanted me to immediately take my computer to Office Depot or Staples to have it cleaned up, and told me that it would cost me over $300. Of course, I said I couldn't afford this...so his response was to offer me a great deal and have one of their technicians do it remotely and only charge me $200. I immediately smelled a scam and asked him to disconnect from my computer immediately and connect me to someone to talk about my bill. He complied, but connected me to a number that said "you are calling after hours"
To me, this is a scare tactic scam. It is overpriced and just a door into their marketing of technical services. I would look somewhere else to find help for your computer.
