I have a tech support subscription with Geek Squad/Best Buy. I tried calling 1-800-Geek Squad and inadvertently dialed the wrong number, which was never told to me by the computer technicians who answered the phone. I told them about the subscription and that I was having trouble with me computer. Never did anyone there say that the name of the business is Geeks Technical Support or suggest in any way that they were not Geek Squad. I asked point blank if they were Geek Squad. I was then told that the name Geek Squad is used for hardware and their side deals with software and is called Geeks Technical Support. I now know that I dialed the wrong number and they knew that all along.

Because I had a severe problem, I was easy prey for them. They told me that the current subscription I have is not good enough to ward off severe viruses and I should upgrade to a lifetime subscription for $599.99. That's what I was charged by them. Never did they mention that they are not Geek Squad or affiliated with Geek Squad. They led me to believe that their business is software and the name Geek Squad is for hardware only. When I got a notice recently from Geek Squad about renewing my tech support contract, I went into Best Buy and was told they had no record of any lifetime subscription and did not even offer any such thing. Because of what I have recently learned online about their other practices, I would be afraid to ever use any of their services since others have evidently been given viruses by their shenanigans.

Another thing I learned from the Best Buy manager is that it is a common tactic for scammers to get phone numbers very similar to that of businesses whose customers they wish to prey upon. At another web site, I saw that someone misdialed in the attempt to reach the Apple support service and got Geeks Technical Solutions, who never properly identified themselves.

I believe that they are very aware of the thin line they are treading and do everything possible to deceive about whothey really are. They are frauds.
