One of the things that people automatically assume is that if they are hit by an uninsured driver then a carrier is going to send them a check automatically for whatever coverage they have purchased. 

Think it through-if that was actually true, how long would any insurer stay in business? Everyone with a policy would suddenly be getting hit by hit and run drivers.

An unisured motorist policy covers you for an accident involving another uninsured driver. BUT....to collect, ther are very special circumstances that must to met.  Depending on the state involved, there are laws called Threshhold Laws that must be met-not just 'I'm hurt, pay me'.  A typical Threshhold is stated thus: The injured party must suffer...'loss of a body part, permanent loss of a body function, a permanent injury, a broken bone, permanent loss of employment, etc.'.  In laymans terms, you either need to have an amputation, be blinded in one eye, become permanently disabled, break your leg, etc. 

The fact that you have $12.000 in medical bills is irrelvant. Just a local trip to an E/R can be that much-particularly if you stay overnight.

I do not know what state you live in, but in some states there is a mandatory coverage called No Fault that will pay those bills. If you live in a state that does not have it, then health care will pay them. 

From your complaint, it seems to me that your case does not meet your local Threshhold Laws and the $500 they offerred is what those in the industry call a nuisance value.

You can probably get a better explanation of whatever Threshhold Laws are applicable in your state by contacting your local State Insurance Department.

Oh, and one other thing...if you are sold an Uninsured Motorist coverage on your policy, it is probable that the coverage is Required by your state-many states have mandatory coverages.

They only care about making profits, even if it means financially injuring their own customers and even their own employees. You must have asked them by now. It's illegal for them to just ignore legal claims under the terms of your policy. IF they are truly doing this, immediately report this to your state's insurance commissioner.
