The other day I got a call from a collections company, since we have no debt at all I was shocked by this and returned the call.  I discovered that GMAC had put me into collections and I asked how that could be when I didn't have any insurance with them.  They told me that because I had canceled my insurance I had a fee that was never paid.  I told them I didn't cancel it, I just chose not to renew it.

I ended up calling GMAC and they said that they had automatically renewed my policy and then canceled me a week later for non-payment.  So I owed them $31.00 for the week and then $50.00 for the cancelation.  I was outraged.  I asked how they could decide to renew me without my permission, she said that is their standard practice.

I told her I never got a bill, I certainly would have called a year ago when this happened.  But her response was "we mailed it, I show it as mailed, I can't say what the post office did with it, it's in our records that we mailed it so we have proof".

I ended up paying because our credit is perfect and I didn't want to ruin that because of $81 but from my perspective I was ripped off, I was robbed.  This is a horrible way to run a a business and I will never deal with this company again.

If you just choose to non-renew your policy I understand the law. But if you chose another carrier, all you need to do is show proof of insurance with new carrier and they need to remove those fees. GMAC can not charge you because you found a better rate. Since Arizona is a reporting state, which means insurance carriers report insurance changes, cancelations to the DMV they must renew automatically. To get that charge removed if you truely did have another carrier just send them proof and they can remove those charges.

Just got home yesterday afternoon after a few months on the road and there was a letter from the Insurance company that arrived in late June.  I stated yeseterday morning that I had not reiceved anything, and that was incorrect.  For some reason this document was not forwarded with other mail that was.

Just a run around

I called the number as requested and the person I got on the phone was very understanding and I thought perhaps something was going to get done.  She stated she had to look into some things and would get back to me the next day.

Well the next day came and I got a voicemail from another person.  That message was basically if I would like to talk, with her I could call back.  The tone of voice was a bit off-putting, sounded like I was just going to get another rationale for their behavior and I was busy at work so couldn't call back right away.

When I had a free minute at work I called back and I was told that person was gone for the day.  I left my name but never heard back again.

During my first call I was told on the phone that AZ requires this, but here's the thing Arizona does not require insurance for travel trailers, this wasn't auto insurance this was a trailer and there is no law in Arizona that requires insurance for this type of trailer.  So the argument provided just doesn't fly.

Like I said originally the $81.00 isn't going to hurt me all I have to say is buyer beware when dealing with this company.  When people ask me for recommendations for RV insurance I will (and have already) warned people against this company.  I have no desire to keep going back and forth with their customer service.

My biggest problem was not the $81.00 it was with being sent to collections without any warning, I did not receive a bill for the $81.00 and over the course of the year before this went to collections I did not receive any additional notification from them stating there was a problem.  Just a call from a collections company a year after the policy ended.  I have perfect credit, I do not have any debt and to be sent to collections over $81.00 without any attempt to resolve this is unacceptable to me, I would have paid the $81.00 a year ago if I had known about it.

I am the Customer Relations Supervisor at National General Insurance (formerly GMAC Insurance), and would really like you to reach out to my Executive Customer Relations team regarding this issue.

In Arizona, policies are not allowed to "expire" at the end of the term.  Instead, a 7 day grace period is required to be granted after the renewal date.  If no premium payment is made during the 7 day grace period, the policy cancels, and any premium accured during the grace period is billed.

If you had obtained other insurance at that time, we can adjust our policy record accordingly and refund the payment you made.

My team may be reached at 800.847.6442 Ext. 37977.  We look forward to assisting you.
