I purchased a 2006 Suzuki Reno for a "drive off" price which I wrote a check for the total.
They told me the paperwork could be signed in a few days "no problem," and they would call me.
When I returned for the title, they told me they could not get a clear title on this vehicle, however, if I wanted to pay the additional $1400. due on the trade-in payoff, I could then get it.

They tried to get me to take my choice of 2 other vehicles which were not comperable which I refused. Since I would not pay the $1400., they asked me to return the car. I did not return the car because I already paid them in full. They told me they would report the car as stolen.

You need to report this to the DMV

However, if you never received paperwork on the car, you are not in good shape. They can say anything they want, such as the money you gave them was a down-payment, or a deposit. Since you have no contract/receipt to prove that you paid the car in full, you don't have a leg to stand on.
