I bought a generator from Harbor Freight in East Brunswick on 11/19/2013 and after using it for the weekend, the generator would not shut off even after switching it off. I took it back to the same Harbor Freight on 11/29/2013 and asked for a refund, but they charged me a 20% restocking fee. On their website it says "Any generator returned for any reason after the 90 day satisfaction guarantee period will be subject to a 20% restocking charge and must be returned freight paid."

It was clearly 10 days after the day of purchase and they still charged me a 20% restocking fee in addition to applying the state sales tax 7% (New Jersey). In total they charged me 27% restocking fee. However, when they scanned the barcode, it came up as FULL REFUND on the computer, but they manually added a 20% restocking fee (plus the state sales tax was applied).

The district manager, CARMINE, said he would offer a replacement but would still charge a 20% restocking fee if something was wrong with it and I tried to return it within 90 days.

I called Customer Service as soon as I returned home on 11/29/2013 and complained about it, but I'm not sure what they are going to do.

I also filed a complaint on the Better Business Bureau website because I was wrongly charged a 20% (plus 7%) restocking fee, and still waiting for a reply back.

You guessed wrong

The generator didn't work which is why I wanted to return it and since you guessed wrong, maybe you should give back the money i was wrongly charged of. Before you go around accusing me of something I didn't do, maybe you should READ what happened and give helpful advice. The district manager gave me BULLSHIT which is why I went to BBB. And for your information, I knew there was a restocking fee as previously noted, and I went to return it 10 days AFTER I had purchased it. It clearly states in their return policy that I will be charged a 20% restocking fee after the 90 day guarantee. AND I never said it was illegal for them to charge a restocking fee, but the fact that they charged me a restocking fee BEFORE 90 days and when it says FULL REFUND ON THE SCREEN, is NOT RIGHT. maybe you should learn to understand what someone had previously written before going around accusing people of doing nothing wrong.

WAA WAA! I wanted to use this and return it but they want me to pay for it!!!! You are confusing them with say a RENTAL outfit. You are also confussing the WEBSITE vs. THE STORE!! The website information MAY NOT directly reflect the policies inside the store. Maybe there was a problem, maybe there wasnt. After years of dealing with customers, Im willing to bet that there MAY have been a issue but it could have been resolved by exchanging it. But since im a betting man Im pretty sure I can guess what happend. You buy it and find a minor issue. You then find it cheaper elsewhere. You then attempt to bring it back making up things to be wrong with it. They tell you there is a restocking fee. You flip out. You demand to speak with someone higher up. That person doesnt buy your bullshit. You try internet blackmail and the BBB.

It is not "Illegal" for them to demand a restocking fee. Especially on a higher end item such as a genny. Your just mad because had you purchased it from the website, you could have gotten ALL your money back. But since you RETURNED it at the store, there is a 20% restock fee. Get over it.
