HWA Home Warranty of America BE AWARE! This company collected $$ for the warranty but when it comes to actually providing a service, its a denial all the way. They have denied my claim even though their own service provider filed it as a normal "wear and tear"; they will not agree to any appeals or re-considerations. Their manager, Melissa Hoffman, will flat out "no" you without willing to work things through or re-consider. Internet
*General Comment: Home Warranties seldom cover everything
We have HWA warranty as a precaution, in case anything in our newly-bought, 13 yearl old house will break. Our contract with HWA specifies that equipment they warrantied is old. Now, that our pool exchanger broke down, after 3 weeks of antagonizing follow ups and conversations, they denied it. Their own service company classifies our breakage as 'normal wear and tear', but its not good enough also. Now they decided that it hasn't been too much time since we owned the house therefore they feel equipment was already broken down, even though we had an inspection and got everything to work at least twice.

Home Warranties seldom cover everything

I'm sorry to hear you've had this problem.
In my experience, a home warranty agreement seldom covers everything in the home, and many of the smaller items are subject either to deductibles or to limitations due to "ordinary wear and tear" for items that have shorter life expectancies. For example, a bathroom fan would be covered as "electrical equipment", but the lightbulb in the vent / fan might not because lightbulbs only last a few months or a year.
Normally only major appliances, such as the air conditioning and heating system, hot water heater, range, oven, and so on are covered. Because you have a pool, there should be a section which states which components of the pool are covered. Please review your agreement to see if it lists the specific items that are covered.
I briefly searched the Internet for information about pool heat exchangers and the warranties which cover them. The prices I found were only a few hundred dollars and the warranties were only a few years.
You mentioned that they claimed you'd not lived in your home for very long and that the heat exchanger must have been broken when you purchased the house. I'd suggest you get a copy of the inspector's report and forward that to HWA if the report indicates that the heat exchanger was inspected and tested and your warranty covers the heat exchanger.
