In March of 2004 I purchased an Eliptical trainer from Icon Health & Fitness, the purchase price was $389. w/free shipping because they are located in the same town as me. I made a one time charge on my debit/credit card in the amount of $100 towards the purchase price of the equipment.
I figured that with this purchase I would recieve a payment coupon booklet, account info, and payment plan in the mail shortly. I was much surprised when I got an overdraft charge on my checking account, from them charging me another $49 in April, on my credit/debit card. I called the number on the charge on my card, where I was treated to 45 minutes on hold, to be met with terrible customer service, and total attitude. They informed me that they couldn't refund my money (which I never asked them too, I just didn't want them to charge my card again) I told them I understand that I owed them money, but that they have no right to charge my card without my consent and my explicit authorization.
I informed them that I had called my bank, and made a claim against them and that any future charges to my card would be considered an illegal act. They proceeded to put me thru to the sales department, where I was treated even worse than before.
The person in sales informed me that it couldn't be illegal for them to charge my card automatically because they had been using that procedure for years (great so I wasn't the first to be ripped off) and verbally harassed for about 30 minutes. I did put a stop payment on them with my bank, but it didn't do any good they still charge my card 2 more times, and I finally just sent them a check for payment in full. Of course that didn't stop them from charging my card one more time. So I actually ended up paying $500 dollars for the equipment. I tried to get my money back thru my bank, but that was joke, and I am planning on cancelling my account ASAP with them (Wells Fargo if any body wants to know.
I filed a complaint with the BBB of Utah, but it didn't get me anywhere, they just verified that I was treated bad, Icon called and apoligized, but they still never gave me my money back. I am waiting for yet another charge on my now nonexistant card (because I had to destroy it to prevent future unauthorized charges on it) from them.
