Its simple. The website looks like an official us government website. There are links for green card renewals, to file for citizenship etc. Since it looks like an official government web site you have the impression that you have no choice but to pay the $149 in order to file for citizenship (as well as the filing fee for the government).
As if thats not bad enough, after they have taken your money, and you spend hours filling out the form, you cannot print it out. Theres just a message informing you to print it out and file. No address to send it to, no directions on how to print it out, nothing. Not only do you get robbed of your money, but you get robbed of your time.
I am amazed the government hasnt shut these scammers down. Ive seen their rebuttals but the truth is if they were really concerned about "customers" they would make an effort clarify that they are not a government web site and that you can get the forms for free. Also its doesnt say $149 for the service (they claim the service is the phone support, and the online tools, etc), it says $149 for the form. That is false advertising and they know it. Grounds for a lawsuit I think.

Supposed comparison by ImmigrationDirect to attorney fees

ImmigrationDirect responded to this complaint by stating that the "service" they provide is quite economical compared to attorney fees.
We have checked with a practicing immigration attorney with offices in Manhattan (New York City) regarding what he would charge for filling out an N-400 form. Note that ImmigrationDirect misleads customers on-line, attempting to get them to remit $149 in return for printing out a completed N-400 form, after strongly suggesting that the $149 is an APPLICATION FEE to file the form and have it processed by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency.
Our immigration attorney states he would charge no more than $75 to fill out an N-400 form.
So much for ImmigrationDirect's claim that they offer a much more cost-effective solution.
