Warning to those seeking employment in Michigan.

I noticed scanning the reports and rebuttals on your sight, there were none from Michigan. Either people in Michigan are too smart to play, or, IPA is new here. Knowing my peers, and having worked several years with small business owners in Michigan, I'd guess it's the latter.

Recently, I posted my resume on Career Builders. I made my resume available to prospective companies. Within days, their "Director of Recruiting", emailed me an outline of their company and services provided, complimenting me on my "impressive" resume. She directed me to their website, and suggested if I was interested in persueing a position for Senior Sales Manager in the Grand Rapids Mi area, to please call her at my earliest convenience.

The website appeared to be legit, and professionally designed. This didn't look like a fly by night company. They do a great job of tooting their own horn and giving testimonials and credibility thru association with top organizations and personalities.

I called Tammy Z. to arrange an interview. I was a little scepticle when I started my conversation with "I have a few questions", and she cut me off, asking nothing about me, but arranging a phone interview for the next Monday. She said she would send me eleven pages of information I should review before my interview. This seemed strange in itself, since we had done no conversing about my qualifications, or details about the position.

Monday A.M., Jeff Z. called me for an interview. His first question was, "why are you available to start immediately?" Another red flag! I think he was fishing to see how vulnerable I was to his manipulation, or desperate for a job. He proceeded to talk REALLY fast, using specific verbage to lure me into the snare.

When I tried to ask questions, he would cut me off, never giving a direct answer, and tried to invalidate my "need to know". I hung up with little more knowledge about the company than what I had started with. I knew they picked up the bill for hotel, transportation to and from the airport, and 2 meals per day for a one week training session at their facility. I would have to buy my own plane ticket. I didn't even know who my Regional Director would be, nor had I spoken to anyone but Jeff. There was no invitation to an "in person" interview. He told me to take the day to think about whether or not their company or this position would be a good fit, and to call him back tomorrow.

Jeff painted such a pretty picture of the company, and positon, he made it seem like "shooting fish in a barrel." I smelled a rat. When I tried to call back, requesting to speak with my prospective Regional Manager, a Sales Manager from my region, or a satisfied customer (knowing the testimonials on the website could be fabricated), Jeff became defensive. He said they redirected the responsibility of any prospective employees to his role, in order to lighten the load of the Regionals, and because of confidentiality agreements, I could speak with neither a customer nor a sales rep.

Jeff reassured me, I would get all the info I needed to solidify their legitimacy with the info packet they forwarded me via email. There were several links to access, but all propaganda was data they had submitted from their own company. There was nothing that gave them credibility from an outside source. So....I googled them. WOW! Look out!!

What an eye opener! This is just a warning to others who may be approached thru job market search engines. Michigan is a desperate economy right now. Desperate means vulnerable. I would dread to think what could happen to small business owners who are already hanging on by the seat of their pants financially, and they lose the last of what they have to a scam like IPA. I read one report from a former Senior Sales Rep, and from a former Analyst. Someone could really screw up an otherwise respectable reputation with local businesses with any history of association with this company. BE WARE!!

Too smart to play

AUTHOR: Disillusioned - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 28, 2007

I only wished that I could have read some of these postings prior to spending a week in Chicago training with IPA. This is a company built on a pile of BS. They lie and lie again to everyone. I don't think they could tell the truth if their lives depended on it. You can read my posting on this site from back in August or September describing my experiences.

First, they come across as very professional and interested in you. I wasn't "sweet talked" like you described, but was treated very professionally and invited to a phone interview. They sent me a bunch of stuff in my e-mail which I had a chance to read. I also checked out their web site and even googled them. I found nothing negative and what I saw on line was all glowing testimonials.

They invited me to come to Chicago for a week of training and wanted me to front the plane fare. Their rationale was that would "guarantee that I would attend and complete the training" since they were investing in me as a new rep. I was told that they would reimburse the plane fare after I completed the training. Ordinally that alone would be a deal breaker, but plane fare from where I live to Chicago is very cheap and I also have a daughter who lives in Chicago.

They also explained the compensation system and how they generater leads and sales. It sounded like shooting fish in a barrel and could be a real money maker. They also explained their "quick pay" system for new reps so they can have a good cash flow starting out.

Since they wanted me to put the plane fare on a credit card, I felt committed to attend their training. It was in their training that some of the initial lies became apparent. First the "quick pay" program wasn't exactly like it was explained to us on the phone. When everyone in the training class was upset about it, I realized it wasn't jusrt me misinterpreting what they had said.

Then they said that the plane fare would be reimbursed only after we had made a sale in the field. When someone complained about that (they had flown in from Seattle), we were told that we should have no trouble making a sale the first week out of training. We were also told that the reimbursement would be handled through the "travel department" and would be taken care of following the report of our first sale.

I made my first sale on Monday of the second week in the field and it was a "self generated" sale since i had set the appointment. I realized the first week that the "appointments" set by their telemarketers (B.C.s as they are called) were bogus and if I was to make this work, I had to generate my own appointments. In fact, I had made three sales that week and a fourth one on Monday of the following week and I was suddenly their new "hot shot". All but one were "self generated" and one was a "go" for consulting services.

After a few weeks had passed I asked about the reimbursment on the pplane fare and learned that there is no "travel department" and that I would have to complete an expense report including my ticket (which I had throwm out since I felt i no longer needed it). When I complained, they accepted the posting on my credit card. We could have been told how to prepare this report and that we wouldl need to hold on to our plane ticket after we returned, but weren't.

I finally received my reimbursement for the plane ticket more than six weeks after I returned from their training session. Their "quick pay" system wasn't so quick either. I sold a deal on a Monday and it "ran" on the following Thursday with the owner paying the fee on Friday, yet it was still more than two weeks before I received the "quick pay" part (35% of the commission) and more than a month before I received the rest of the commission.

In fact that was a common complaint among those in my training class. We managed to keep in touch following training and within four months all 14 of us who completed the training had left IPA. I left after three months and rthey still owe me more than $1000 on a commission on a deal I sold that "ran" prior to my leaving. But because they delay more than a month to cut their checks, I had already left IPA. I haver filed complaints to the U.S. Department of Labor, the IRS and the state wage and hour division.

They have been operating in Michigan for a long time. I was in training with a man from suburban detroit and was field trained by a woman from the Detroit area.
