Internet Logos fraudulent credit card charge Leary? Georgia Internet

I had a charge on my credit card for this merchant. I tried to find the merchant online but cannot. I tried calling the phone number that appeared on my charge statement but it went to a voicemail box that was full. In a reverse directory lookup I found that the phone number goes to a private residence in Georgia.

I tried the number again and someone picked up and immediately knew that I had problems with suspicious charges. She had "several other calls" from other people about similar charges. The woman said there was a problem with the vendor they run their credit card charges through and she didn't know anything about what was happening.

When I asked for her company's web address, she gave it to me with some hesitation. The address she gave me went to an unregistered domain which I immediately told her on the phone. I asked if she would help me resolve the charges but the woman refused to fix the charges on her end and said that I needed to resolve the problem with my credit card company because she had nothing to do with it.

When I asked how she obtained my card number, she said she didn't know and that she knew there were problems with the online merchant who runs their charges. She also said she was very upset that her phone number was appearing on people's credit card billing statements and that she had requested for the phone number to be removed so that it did not appear when charges from her company showed up on people's credit card statements.

The charge was for less than $13 but what concerns me is that somehow this unknown merchant obtained my credit card number which I am extremely careful about safeguarding. Also, it seems like there are a lot of charges like this on other people's credit cards which leads me to believe that the problem is widespread fraud.
