This horrible experience all started just before Christmas in 2010.  I decided that it was about time to propose to my wonderful girlfriend of 5 years.  I went in and started browsing their jewelry selection and found a princess cut solitaire ring that looked great.  The sales person told me the ring was .5 carat.  This ring was on sale as the ring was previously returned.  The tags didn't have any information on them. It just said 14K WG princess cut.  The clerk looked it up and said the ring was .5 carat.

I brought it to a jeweler two months later and the jeweler informed me the ring was NOT .5 carat and was only .38 carat!!!!!!! It was stamped .38 inside the band only visible under magnification. The problems only get worse from here.  I went to return the ring and it was just outside the return date.  After some ranting I got them to allow me store credit towards another ring.  The new one was a 1 carat bridal set.  This rings had all the tags with all the information.. Sounds good right? WRONG!! This ring was an "invisible setting ring".

My fiance brought the new ring in for a cleaning after two weeks of owning it.  They cleaned the ring using an ultra sound machine.  When the ring was handed back to her, she quickly noticed that it was missing a diamond in the invisible setting. JC penney agreed to have the ring repaired since it broke in their machine.  A few weeks later we get the ring back.  Everything looks ok.  10 days after having the ring repaired, another stone started to lift out of the setting!! We went back and they agreed again to have the ring repaired.

After another couple weeks the ring came back NOT REPAIRED!!! They agreed to send it back out again!!!! 2 weeks later the ring comes back with a notice stating that It cannot be repaired!! At this point I am furious, it's been months and she's only been able to wear the ring for a couple weeks.  I want a full and complete refund.  After all the fraud on the first ring and the junk quality on the second ring, I feel I am entitled to a full refund.  They want to exchange the ring instead. They claim its outside the return period! WELL IT BROKE IN YOUR CLEANING MACHINE WITHIN THE RETURN PERIOD!!!!

You're the ones that sent it out for repair for weeks on end only to have it still broken!  Well, the ring they want to exchange it with is supposed to be the same exact one.  Except the color on the one they want to exchange it with is a "K" and I BOUGHT A "J". Also the the one they want to exchange it with has obvious inclusions everywhere! This is unacceptable, after screwing me over on two rings, I don't want anymore junk from here.  Finally after multiple complains to the BBB and to the corporate office, I got another JC PENNEY store in ROCHESTER to grant me my refund!!!!

Worse of all, the person that sold me the invisible setting ring informed me AFTER IT HAD BROKE that all invisible setting rings have problems!!!! Thanks for telling me after I BOUGHT IT!!!!!! You could have told me when I was looking at it, but you'd rather lie to me and say how great the ring is when you know fully that the ring is going to break in the near future. THIS IS JUST PLAIN FRAUD!!!!!!!! DO NOT BUY JEWELRY FROM JC PENNEY! THEY WILL LIE TO YOU ABOUT THE SIZE OF THE RING AND THEY WILL LIE ABOUT THE QUALITY! Then they try to keep your money after they get done screwing you!

Just wanted to post that we were able to find a ring elsewhere that hopefully works out for us (I will be saying prayers).  I don't think the employees at JC Penney's did anything out of malice.  I think the saleswoman really did think the first ring was .50 carat.  Not a good excuse, but she didn't do it to harm us.  On the second ring, I can't really expect a sales associate anywhere to not try and make a sale. However, after knowing what happened on the first ring, a bit of warning about known problems with invisible settings would have been greatly appreciated.  We simply would of bought a ring for the same amount of money that wasn't an invisible setting, then all of this would have been avoided.  In the end, I did get all my money back.... It costs us a lot of time and my finance a lot of tears.  However, we didn't end up losing a dime thankfully. Also, I am d**n lucky that the ring broke in their machine.  If it had broke anywhere else I would still be stuck with that thing and trust me stones in invisible settings are gonna pop out sooner or later. I have made other smaller jewelry purchases at JC Penney and never had a problem.  However, I cannot in good faith recommend them to someone looking for an engagement ring. THEY NEED TO STOP SELLING ALL INVISIBLE SETTING RINGS AT ANY AND ALL STORES EVERYWHERE!  After some research it is well known worldwide that they have major problems, but people still keeping buying them and stores keep selling them.  I also believe the sales associates did feel sorry for us but were bound by all the rules that kept trying to screw us. Especially after the ring came back from repair the 2nd and the 3rd time not repaired!!  JC PENNEY also needs to better train their jewelry associates.  Their knowledge of jewelry is extremely lacking at best.  They seem to not have a good idea on how the 4 c's of buying diamonds really works.  They also need to make sure that the size of their diamonds is properly documented to AVOID EVER SELLING A .38 CARAT RING AS A .50 CARAT RING.  There should never be any doubt to the size of a ring. Also, I have to say it again, STOP SELLING INVISIBLE SET RINGS!!!!!!!! THEY ARE OF THE MOST POOR QUALITY EVER!!!
