I recently bought a television set for my young grandchildren for Christmas. However, after discussing it with my wife, we decided that they are too young (4 y/o twins) to have a television set in their room.

Between the time we bought the set and the time we made this decision, we somehow managed to lose the store receipt. This was only a matter of a few days (less than a week). However, the set was still in the box unopened and I expected that I would at least be able to obtain a store credit for the return. WRONG!

They told me VERY ABRUPTLY that without a receipt they couldn't help me. Not a store credit. Not a merchandise exchange. Nothing. They wouldn't even talk to me... Treated me as if I was somehow being unreasonable for asking to return the uneeded TV.

It's no wonder that K-Mart is in financial trouble. They treat their customers with contempt. I have, for the last time, set foot in K-Mart. I don't care if they're GIVING STUFF AWAY, I WILL NOT be back!

no receipt

AUTHOR: Harry - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 13, 2007

I just read the report about a man and his wife, who could not returne a TV. This man had lost his receipt. Now in most cases you would just get laughed out of a store. In your case. You probably were rude. But why say anything about that in your letter. Stores have been losing a lot of money from people bringing back stuff they said was bought at a certian store.

When in fact it wqas probley stole or bought at a flea market. For a fraction of the cost. It these people that have made it hard for the regular consumer. Most stores have a policy of no receipe no return. Even the big discount stores. Like wal-mart. So if your mad at k-mart. Thats a problem you have not the store.

I have no connection with k-mart or sears, its parent company. I am just a person who was in retail for a number of years. Who got very tired of seeing consumers trying to rip off companys like k-mart,

How far can we go?

AUTHOR: Timm - ()

I guess this is a compilation of previous reports, but expanded upon.

Electronics are big money items. They're also available at more places than just K-Mart. There are only 2 'house' brands that only K-Mart carries. If it's not one of these two brands, there's no way (other than a receipt, or a shipping/receiving label if it's still on the package) to know it was bought from a K-Mart store. It could be on file in our computer, but that doesn't mean it isn't on file at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, American, Target, or Jim's TV World.

Let's say it is a K-Mart specific brand. How are we to know you paid for it? It's very sad, but there are cases where TVs, DVD players, and almost anything else not nailed down, are walked out of the store without being paid for. (A two-man operation last week walked into our shipping area and used a fire exit to run off with a 32" TV.)

Paid $262.14 after tax, and you've got the credit card summary showing $262.14 for K-Mart from 16 days ago? There's more than one way to get a total charge up to $262.14.

Besides, our registers/computer system now are set up to require the receipt numbers in order to process a return. This insures that the proper stores are charged/deducted/etc. Without these numbers, there's no way to even be able to refund it.

Would you complain about RCA if you tried to send your TV back to them while under warranty, when you'd gotten the box home and just tossed out the warranty card? Businesses have to presume you're guilty until you prove yourself innocent. Thank the people that truely are ripped off and those who rip off for that... and in the meantime, just hold onto that piece of paper!

#3 UPDATE EX-employee responds

I know how it is and K-Mart is

Up until a few months ago, I worked for K-mart doing every job imaginable from working behind the service desk, to stocking shelves, to claeaning. Anyway, what they did was wrong. I understand why they tried to pull that bull, but it's wrong. See, they get people all the time saying they bought and want to return things that aren't K-Mart's.

The thing is, you had the TV still in the box. All they had to do was SCAN the television through the register to prove it is their product. I'd suggest calling the nearest K-Mart and asking for the district manager's name and a number where he can be reached. He is above the store manager and he "has the power".

Honestly, the K-Mart people were just trying to do their job. They are pissy and they can be very very rude, but they get a lot of crap. If one thing is returned that is not from K-Mart, most likely the sales associate who took in the item will be held responsible.

It's a matter of bad communication within the store and very poor management, that is why K-Mart's going under to begin with. They don't care about the customer, they care about their paycheck and that's it.

The thing is, it seems each store makes up its own rules and policies. This is why you can return things in some stores with no reciepts and not return them in others.

The customer is always the one to suffer!

This is Very new to K mart and a lot of people are going to be very upset with this new procedure. But , It is due to the extrem amounts of returns every day and we also take back stuff that probley isn't even ours. Wal mart is the same way with a lot of this. I have found it harder to return things at Wal mart then K mart.

I know this may sound harsh but that is the way the new procedure is.

So if you buy anything from K mart just rember to keep your have your recipet, It isn't a rip off and I am not just sticking up for the company but that is the way it is going to be so we have to live with it. Its not really bad so dont get so up tight with this.

Just keep that little slip of paper how hard can that be? Any questions feel free to write me I work at a k mart(No flame letters please)

Why should they take a loss on sales because you lost your reciept.

Without a reciept why should they return your tv? Common knowledge should tell you that you should keep reciepts for anything expensive or eletronics especially. And even more so if you aren't sure that you are going to keep it. Most any place would not or should not return something like that. They don't know if you bought it a week ago or a year ago.

And they also don't know if you bought it at k-mart, wal-mart, target etc.. Why should they take a loss on sales because you lost your reciept. Do you not realize that eletronics are a high theft item in any store. I surely wouldn't return something like that without a reciept.
