*REBUTTAL Owner of company: We adopted/sold out a young Malamute named Wakey to Hope Ambos and Art Ambos of Marion, Illinois, on July 1, 2010.
When our 18 month old purebred alaskan malamute arrived via gutted van, we were dismayed at the condition of the dog. She had to be physically removed from the van by two men, due to her fear of people. There was also another puppy, looked about 6 months old. He was in a wire crate, on straw. It was very hot, however the puppy was left in the van, for an extended period of time, as we discussed the dog we had delivered.
Out of concern, our neighbor, came out and asked the young man if the puppy would be alright in the van, since the temperatures were in the high 80's, and the air conditioning was off. They assured the neighbor, the puppy would be alright. He said the windows were open, and showed no concern for the puppy.
Our dog, once pulled physically into our yard, laid down, and did not get back up. Believing this to be due to the long trip, I continued to speak with the young men about the dog. They did not appear to know very much about this animal. They were offered something to drink, ice tea, etc. Didn't want any, as they wanted to get on the road north, back to wisconsin to deliver the puppy.. They were members of the Kool Family. It was Pat Kool's idea for them to bring the dog to us, instead of their ground transporter, Steve, stating Steve's schedule has been changed due to the death of his father. Over a month passed, and she said members of her family were going on a business trip "Out West", and it would be better for the dog, to be delivered by them, to us. We had already wired $550.00 to Kool Family Malamutes, for the ground transporter to bring our dog to us, which at that time, Jim Kool, said would be a week, or possibly two, in our conversation on the phone. We were quite disappointed to have to wait a month for her to be brought to us...
The dog did arrive, and her condition and behavior was that of a dog who had been neglected.. My passer by neighbor saw the dog in the yard, came over, and after seeing her more closely, confirmed our suspicions, and said the dog had been neglected. She saw sores on her belly... I asked if she would verify that, and speak with Jim Kool, to which she responded, she would, and she did, as did I. He was dismissive of my concerns. I told him I would have this dog checked by my vet, and get back with him. He stated that by all means, I should have the dog checked by my vet. He encouraged me to do so...Apparently, that was to appease me, since they declined to pay for the tests we had to have run, and expenses.
I called the vet that gave this dog her rabies shot, the tag which was not included in the records, sent by the Kool's...The office manager stated that Jim Kool was indeed a good client, and bought the worm preventive and heartworm medications from them. She did say, he was in there often, and had very many dogs. I was told that Jim Kool, treated the dogs himself, for the worm prevention and parasite prevention. The Kool Family records were sketchy, the preventative treatment done a week before the dog arrived.. The hair on both thighs had obviously been shaved off.. New growth looked to be about a month old, which could explain the delay in getting her to us. Her under belly has sores, being treated by my vet with antibotics and topical ointment. Her coat is encrusted with so much sand, that the odor permeates everything she touches. More than offensive..
I e-mailed Pat Kool, with all of my concerns, complaints, and at each juncture, she put "spin" on every question, and was vague and evasive, in her reply, and trying her best to make me feel as though I were in the wrong to even suggest, something was amiss with the dog, and the transaction..
I e-mailed Pat, to ask for payment for the unexpected vet bill, to which she requested a long list of what she wanted from our vet. No problem for us, but then she recanted, that no matter what the vet found, she would not pay for any care, since we chose to have the vet check out the dog. She did not think anything was wrong. Apparently she did not know that Jim Kool had in fact, encouraged me to have the dog checked, when I spoke to him the day the dog arrived.
Can I tell ALL of you, that the dog has had little or no exposure to human socialization, and basically we were sent a wild pack dog, under the auspices of Kool Alaskan Malamutes. We will have to have an animal behaviorist evaluate her, before much else can be done, other than treat her physical symptoms, and clean her up, love her, care for her, and be very glad she is with us. Our vet, and people from rescue, have said, that a dog, not socalized to people in general, will take quite some time to rehabilitate, or main stream into a home, and become a pet.
If you look closely at her farm, buildings, and grounds, and pay close attention to the photographs, you will see that these dogs are many in number, and we noticed that the monther of one litter was lying on straw. There is no sanitary way to have dogs on straw, like horses.. That could explain the excessive worming that takes place, and problems with coccidia, which indicates possible problems with parasite infections and infestations...
Basically we have done a rescue. We did not receive a healthy, happy, well socalized dog. She has spent the past 18 months in the Kool environment of kennel dogs. We have already spent alot of money on her, and will do so in the future. We were aware she did have HD, however, no xrays were included in the sketchy medical history that was sent.
Early stages of HD, will need supplements which we are giving her, however, an xray should have been taken in order to make that diagnosis, and have us sign a contract to give her supplements... Rather still, what would have been more appropriate, would have been total disclosure of the kind of dog we were actually getting, and her care there ramped up to at best decent medical care and human socalization.
For us, this has certainly been an adventure into the world of verbal artistry, spin, and ripoff.. What we saw, was not what we got. Make sure, you collect all the information on any organization, or breeder that is available, and check references. Certainly, I do realize this is not the only complaint regards this outfit, however, I pray that it will be the last, and that by our speaking out on such treatment of dogs, and the people that truly do love them, everyone will make a special effort to do more homework than they think necessary, and report any and all concerns to the proper agencies, before any transactions can take place. We have had confirmation by others that this dog certainly needs help, and while we are going to do that, it is by no means the kind of dog one would buy from a reputable breeder. Key word here folks, is Reputable. Cross all your t's , dot all your I's, and make sure to do your homework.
Buyer Beware!!! Do not let these dogs, on the Kool Alaskan Malamute website sway your decision on whether or not you are at the right place for an artic dog. As in, if I call myself a car, that does not make me a car.!!!
