I am an obese, desperate woman, trying for years to loose some weight.
I have never been to the gym before, but I heard friends and co-workers complaining about messed up credit report due to gym traps.
I went to the gym one evening, sad, depressed, desperate to loose the weight. I met an employee up front and explained my situation, he told me instantly "you are at the right place." I signed up for the regular membership with a agreement for a on time fee of 179 dollars, and a monthly payment of 34.99, no contract, I can cancel anytime I want, but I have to give them 30 days notice. Cool, cool, cool.
I was a stranged, confused young woman, don't know how use the machines, when another employee from "Body Of Change" appraoched me and offerred a free session, he introduced me to his manager, I explained my situation, want to loose weight, dieting, the pills don't work, I have tried many weight lost program, they work for other people but not for me. He told me we will help you to loose the weight, he also told me about the free session. I was speechless. After thirty minutes of exercise, I truly felt better, I know the benefits of a good body, a perfect body, overall the benefits of regular exercises.

I decided to sign up for the training sessions, I told the manager that I am currently a full time student, depending on my husband for everything, I cannot afford a monthly payment of 232 for a personal trainor, but I will give myself a gift by doing it for two months, NO CONTRACT, NO CONTRACT, two months just what I need to learn how to use the machines. He replied "NO CONTRACT, I am sure we can do it for two months. I gave him my credit card, charge it for 387 dollars for the first month, and 232 for the next month. After one month of daily work out by myself and three time weekly with a trainor (1/2 Hour each session), cut down my food intake to smaller portions, I lost fifteen lbs. I know how to use most of the machines, and decided that I can do this on my own.

I went to the manager, trying to cancel the following month, he told me "I hate to loose you as a member, but I knew for were only for a short time". He gave me a form to fill out and mailed to the coporate's office. Two weeks later, a woman from the office called me to let me know that I am on a contract, if I indeed decided to cancel my membership, the will sent it to a collection Agency, and later on to the credit bureau. I gave the woman the manager's name and phone number, I didn't sign any contract, just for two months.

Later on, I called the manager myself, he told me that he remembered our convesation, he will call the coporate's office himself to help me out. the woman called later and told me she spoke the the same manager who claimed that I have a contract for how many years, I don't know, and he don't recall our conversation about a training session for two months only, anyway, there is no such a thing, as for a such a short period of time. She said if people could sign up and get out of it so easy, everybody would do the same thing. I have to tell my husband about this, he saw the statement anyways, he called the manger himself, he told my husband, "I already took care of this matter", her membeship has been cancelled, which is another smart lie.
I am so desappointed, more depressed than before, I gained 10 lbs again, I refused to go to the gym, I am full of anger. I don't want to go there and face them, they are not honest. they lie to get people to sign up at the gym, and get you into a trap.

There are other issues involved here

There are other issues involved here that have nothing to do with LA Fitness. From the details you provided, it sounds like you are suffering from depression, low self-esteem, and likely overeating. You admit to losing 15 pounds as a result of working out regularly, and that absolutely nothing else you've tried ever worked for you. Why then would you want to cancel your membership? That makes no sense. BUT, it is your right to cancel if you want to.

The cancellation procedure is just as you described -- you must fill out a form and send it to the corporate office. 30 days notice is required for cancellation -- if your form is received less than 30 days before the next billing cycle, you will be charged for that one month, BUT you can still use the facilities for that month.

Now, if you are "too sad" to continue working out and using the facility, then may I suggest seeking some other kind of help for your problems. Being "sad" is not a valid reason for cancelling a gym membership without following the policies that are in place for ALL gym members.
