After having my oil changed my vehicle began to smoke. I took it to the dealership was told that it appeared to have sludge in the motor. They explained that I would have to provide them with proof of oil change records as they felt it had not been properly maintained and therefore they would need approval from the corporate office before they began any repairs.
I contacted my mechanic and he was irate. He then called them and explained that the car had indeed been properly maintained and felt as if they were trying to pull something. He then told them he would be coming over there and show them what the problem was. They explained that they had already taken the engine apart and it would not be possible. He immediately hung up and walked across the street with his lead mechanic. Low and behold the car was sitting in the same place as it was 2 days prior. They told him they would fix it and have it ready the following day. It was for a nice tidy sum of over $300.
About half way home the car began smoking again. After arriving home he called the service department and was told to bring it back in. They now want to see the oil change records and must wait for a reply from the corporate office.
After incurring expenses of repairing my truck and the rental of a car to transport me to and from work, I am out over $500.00 for a fully warranted car. What's a consumer to do!

Do you know about TOYOTA ENGINE OIL SLUDGE?
AUTHOR: Charlene - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Saturday, October 09, 2004
From your post, I see that you own a truck? What model do you own? What model year? What is your mileage?
Are you aware (seems that everyone in the industry is except Toyota) of the widespread and known issues with ENGINE OIL SLUDGE in Toyotas? Did you know that Toyota came out with an "ENGINE OIL GELATION" program which claims that Toyota will pay for sludge repairs for up to eight years and unlimited mileage in any of the 3.3 MILLION affected vehicles?
BUT....don't hold your breath! Toyota has shown that it is NOT following through on this program. It is charging hundreds of dollars for a simple inspection for sludge and more for what it calls "owner maintenance neglect" issues. Despite the public proclamation that it will cover these repairs, it is charging for the repairs and not telling the vehicle owners anything about the engine oil gelation problem. Many of the 3.3 MILLION vehicle owners never got any such letter from Toyota.....which an executive says was mailed out in 2002.
Plenty of Toyota vehicle owners remain in the dark. Toyota isn't helping the situation. What did it do? It effectively removed the prominent letter of notification from its web site and placed it in a more secluded section of the web site. It helped curtail the discussion of engine oil sludge on several prominent web sites. It is controlling discussion of the matter publicly by intimidating the press with its provision of advertising dollars.
Many owners think that what Toyota is doing is worse than unethical. Some have used the word "criminal" to describe the conduct of this company. Far too many owners report being lied to and treated rudely as they attempted to resolve a matter of engine oil sludge.
Please do provide us with further details. What do you know about this problem in Toyotas? What did Toyota say causes this problem?
Be sure to report your sludge case to the National Highway Traffice Administration and the Center for Auto Safety. Send a certified letter to Toyota to formally notify it of the engine condition and ask for full coverage of the repairs.
