I've received quite a few phone calls recently from a strange source. All calls have been @ 9:00pm while I've been busy so I didn't answer. The number on the caller ID said "Peoria County 425-256-3815. Finally tonight, I had a chance to answer. "Angela" informed me that she was attempting to collect a debt. I immediately began asking a lot of questions.

Who's the original creditor..........she didn't know and had to put me on hold.........."NRS Circulation" she finally came back to tell me. What's NRS's phone number and why do I owe them money.....that's when she told me it was for magazines I had ordered in 1999, 7 years ago. The total bill.....$563.50.....I asked her if that seemed a little high just for magazines....she of course agreed. I asked her what magazines were they.......she couldn't tell me. She put me on hold after I asked how she came to the $563.50 figure. Finally she came back with "it's for 23 payments of $24.50".....

I'm thinking I WOULD CERTAINLY REMEMBER SIGNING MY NAME TO SOMETHING THAT COSTS WELL OVER $500.....even in a drunken rage. I told her that I would attempt to contact the ORIGINAL CREDITOR and settle the debt with them myself....she acted scared, said "OK" and hung up.
I did call the 800 # that she left me and indeed Luebke Baker and Associates answered the phone.........

THEN I WENT TO THE RIP-OFF REPORT..........MAN, WHAT NERVE.....IS THIS LEGAL....TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO SETTLE ON A FICTITIOUS DEBT???????? LOOK OUT, I'M GOING TO TRY AND SHUT THEM DOWN.

Dan,

Although it is not illegal for a collection agency to attempt to collect on any debt, valid or not, it IS illegal for a "lawyer" to engage in this practice. It violates the ethics standards of being licensed to practice law.

Never contact any original "creditor" when a collection agency has the "debt". It is illegal for them to even speak with you and it violates the collections contract.

Just dispute the debt in writing with a DEBT Validation request and wait for them to go away. Or just send them a CEASE COMMUNICATIONs request and wait for them to either go away or attempt to sue you.

They will go away.
