I brought my girlfriends' 2003 Kia Rio to Magic Mechanic to be given an estimate to repair her engine (it was locked up, would not turn over).  After hearing good things about Larry Perry's business I was optomistic that I would not have a bad experience as I had had at other automotive repair shops.  This would not be the case.  It turned out that the timing belt had been thrown which caused the engine to run out of time, it dropped a valve and put a hole through one of the pistons.  It was not cost effective to repair the engine; if the car was to be fixed the only solution was to install a used engine.  I was given a price quote over the phone for $2600.  My girlfriend (and her mother) decided they wanted the car fixed as there was still money owed on the car.  After my girlfriend gave a $1200 down payment they ordered the replacement engine from their corresponding scrap yard.  Within a week they had removed the existing engine from the car.  It was not until they went to install the replacement engine that they realized it was not the correct engine for a 2003 Rio.  Larry Perry called me to let me know what had happened, and blamed it entirely on the scrap yard; they sent the wrong engine.  I figured it was no big deal, a few more days until they received the correct engine, right?  Wrong.  The correct engine was going to cost me an added $900 to the original price quote!  This would bring the total quote to $3500!  Larry reasoned that he tried everything he could to get the scrap yard to bend on the price of the correct engine but they would not budge; that they had screwed up not him, and invariably there was nothing he could do for me.  The price "is what it is".  I had no other choice but to find an engine for a cheaper price.  I did just that, and only had to wait for them to receive it for it to be installed.  Magic Mechanic received the engine on Jan. 7th.  I spoke with Larry that day and was told that the car would be ready to go by Tuesday, Jan. 12th.  I would have been happy with the car being done on the 12th, but I did not receive a phone call until that wednesday the 13th.  It was not Larry, and for the life of me I can't remember his name, but the man told me that the car would not be done until a week from that day, which would bring the completion date to wed. Jan 20th.  His reasoning was that the tech that was to work on the Kia had other cars torn down waiting on parts that he had to finish first.  Really?  Nine business days worth of work?  I don't think so.  This all happened because they were not making any money off of the engine that was to be installed since I had supplied it.  I was furious and told him this was unacceptable, etc. etc..  The only reason I went about finding the engine myself was because they had screwed up and ordered the wrong engine, and then added $900 to the original quote!  I wouldn't have ok'd the work for that much money!  Not to mention there was no need for them to have $1200 already since they weren't supplying the engine.  Anyway,  I work nearby so I drove over there on my lunch break and talked to Larry personally.  He was polite and told me that they could have it done by the end of the week.  It was, but still 6 business days after receiving the engine.  Terrible service.  As much as they pride themselves on their reputation you would think they would live up to their claims of such great customer service.  Not the case here, and they will never receive any business from me again!
