The main scam of Match.com is not the auto billing, though that is bad. A much bigger problem is that they do not disclose that a very high percentage of the profiles on the site are not of paying members and therefore these people cannot read your messages or respond to them. The user does not know who is a paying member and who is not, and spends enormous amounts of time reading profiles and attempting to contact people who they cannot contact (unless that person subsequently buys a subscription). This is the game that Match.com plays: you can sign up for free. When you do and your profile is displayed, other people on the site will think they can contact you. But they cannot. If they try, you will only get a message saying someone has sent you a message. You must buy a subscription to read it. If you don't, that person who has tried to contact you hears nothing and their time has been wasted. Match will never disclose to other members who has a subscription and who does not, because no one would contact the non-subscribers and the whole "sign them up for free and then get their money when they want to see who contacts them" would fall apart. Also, the non-subscribers are a big part of the data base that gets other people interested in the website, even though these people cannot be contacted even by subscribers. This has been going on for years and a class action lawsuit for common law fraud would be appropriate and helpful to tens of thousands of people who have had their time and money wasted. This is essentially a gigantic fraud based on creating a false impression of how they site works and failing to disclose how it actually works. Yes, people sometime do meet through Match.com, but the task is much, much harder than it would be if the impression Match gives, that anyone on the site with a profile can be contacted by subscribers, was true. But that is not even close to reality. For every ten profiles a subscriber likes and tries to contact, maybe one will be a current subscriber who can read the message. In effect, it is like giving a customer the impression he is buying a season ticket, when all the customer is getting is a ticket to one game, and that game is not identified. You have to go to the stadium each week with your ticket to find out if this is the game you can get into.

You are absolutely right

You are absolutely right about everything you said but you forgot 2 things

1) Match does offer an option ""Guarantee They'll Read It" which of course is not free. If you pay extra for this option then anyone can read your messages and reply back for free.

2) The site is plagued with fake profiles....so people are wasting their time sending messages to these fake profiles as well as to the non-subscribers who can't read the messages.

The site has been around for a long time....it used to be legitimate....I met my ex-wife back on Match.com back in 2004 and had a child with her. Back then it was possible for her to read and reply back without paying extra.

I recently tried to use it....after 5 days of making the payment, my account was terminated and no reason was given. Here's what Match said

"Please know that due to our Terms of Use, your Match account has been terminated. Due to our privacy practices, we cannot disclose specifics about any Match account, including your own. If you wish to obtain additional information, a valid subpoena, search warrant, or court order directed to Match is required."

Such a pity that so many people are getting scammed by the site....including the auto-billing you mentioned, the unexplained terminations and the fake profiles.
