I bought a Matco 4's tool box from my dealer in January of 2011. On November of the same year (2011) I started to see my tool box paint was starting to chip and rust. I looked further under my tool box and noticed that the bottom of the box was rusting. I informed my dealer of this problem immediately after I learned of it. Since my tool was covered under a "Lifetime" warranty I figured there would be no problem. Well I was wrong.

Fast forward to February of 2012 I finally get a call from the district manager, his name was Mr. Matt Roll. I had to write a letter to Matco's corporate office to get a call from Mr. Roll. Before then I heard nothing about my box or getting it fixed. He informed me that this has happened before and what they do in this situation is send me a kick place to cover the area and for the trouble throw in a add on accessory. I was extremely happy to hear this. Mr. Roll came by the shop I work at to take a look at the box. He right away stated that he thinks it from the floor soap and he would have to talk to the box plant about it.

Another two weeks later I call him to find out what was going on and he informed me that they were going to do nothing because the rust was from the floor soap "as they say". I write Mr. Gillmore who is the President of Matco Tools and he replies one month later saying he is sticking to Mr. Rolls decision. I write Mr. Gillmore another letter informing him the soap was not causing the damage to the box yet it is a manufacture defect (which they sold me on the paint being "powered coated" and not painted). I gave him proof the soap was none abrasive and safe to be near the box.

Another month passes and Mr. Gillmore now has a Mr. Mike Reme  give me a call to inform me that they are still standing with their decision and will not warranty the box, their craftsmanship their painting, ect and that they would still offer me a kick plate (to cover the rear problem RUST) and that was it. As I stated in my second letter to Mr. Gillmore if they were unable to fix the problem and keep their promise I would be forced to take them to court.

I informed Mr. Reme that I was unable to accept their offer to cover the problem as rust doesn't stop and down the line the whole box would be rusted and that since we were both unable to come to an agreement that we would have to let the courts settle this matter even though I wanted to alleviate the need for the court system.

Unfortunately looks like court here we come.

This report is more for an information purpose only! I want to educate any buyers that are looking to buy a tool box from Matco to be careful when making your purchase. My experience and several others of my co-workers are that Matco is not warrantying any of their products as they advertise. Like I said this is my experience so please don't misunderstand it for anything else.

                                                             Buyer be warned!

Matco box rust problem

AUTHOR: SinisterSS - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, December 18, 2013

I just read the article about your Matco tool box rusting, and I remember a specific story my Matco distributor told me about how their paint booths having a moisture issue and the build guys would just paint over the rust. anyway years after he tells me this I wanted to buy a new toolbox and he talked me into buying a Matco box, its funny after I bought a threebay Matco box with locker hutch, hutch door, stainless steel top and side box, all three bottom pieces are rusting as your box is, I contacted my distributor about it, all he did was dragged his feet, finally a year later the district rep comes out looks at it and says "Its due to the floor soap being used" said he'd repair it and offer me a free accessory(which I never got)anyway he sands my toolbox, touched up the paint with a rattle can and installs the kick plates, the rust continues underneath my box and INSIDE my locker cabine!t how does floor soap rust the inside of the locker? so I decide I'm goona remove my toolbox drawers and wouldn't you know! the inside of the acutal toolbox is rusting!, I contacted Matco again with pictures and NO response, I contacted them on Facebook with a nasty message and instantly got a reply, after that my Matco distributor went off on me becuase I got his district rep in trouble(to this day the Matco distributor doesn't talk to me or wanna help me) The rep Bruce(can't remeber his last name) calls me wanting me to take pictures and email them to him, so I did with several months passing and no response, I had to force my Matco distributor to talk to me and he said he would get in touch with Bruce, well a few months go by and I get an email from Bruce asking me to please re-send the pictures because he lost them. That right there tells me they don't care about me or my toolbox, I spent over $13k on this quality piece of crap. To this day 12/18/2013 I haven't heard a word from Matco.
