Sunday 2/13/05 I went to my local McDonalds drive thru and ordered a breakfast sandwich which I had a coupon for. The coupon stated $1.00 for any McMuffin or Biscuit breakfast sandwich. When I got to the service window I handed the cashier

$1.10 which would cover the cost of the sandwich + tax. She replied that the charge was $1.19 I'm no genius but $1.00 plus 8.625% sales tax should equal $1.09 I explained my math to the girl, she replied the the computer is charging $1.19 I explained to her that I am being overcharged. She told the manager who replied that she had no control over the computer. I paid the difference. When I got home I took a good look at the receipt. It showed a $2.19 charge for the sandwich, minus a coupon credit of $1.09 and a Take Out Tax of $.09 for a total charge of $1.19

There is no disclaimer anywhere that I could see. I plan on going back to see if the tax varies depending on the amount of the order. I would like to know if anyone else has had a similar experience.

"Ripped off on the 'take-out' tax"

AUTHOR: Patrick - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, June 19, 2006
Hi everybody. I am the assistant manager for a McDonald's in Gainesville, GA, and I know what you mean when you refer to the take-out or eat-in tax. It seems odd, but the take-out and eat-in is only a glorified way of referring to plain old tax. The programming from the register company automatically says either take-out or eat-in, followed by tax. Yes, I agree it is odd, and leaves room for confusion, but there is no rip-off whatsoever going on in this or any other scenario like this.

My apologies for the confusion, but it is something that store management has no control over, so please do not attack of try to "correct" the store staff for a situation they have no control over to begin with, if that is anyone's intention. Thank you all for your consideration.

Fees & Taxes are just Profit

AUTHOR: Bob - (U.S.A.)

I'm no expert, but I have a hunch, the Take-Out Tax at McDonald's Restaurants is their way of saying THANK YOU.
Thank you, to all of their loyal customers who have been caring out their trash to the parking lot bins, for 50 years.

They used to provide convent garbage receptipacls on the way out, at the ends of the driveway. But with labor costs so high they don't want to raise the price of the food, in order to empty these containers all the time. So, I think their solution to the trash issue, is quite a normal business decision in today's high margin financial climate.

Consumers must be the answer to the growing pollution issues as seen by McDonalds and the fast food industry in general. McDonalds, in today's business model, believe that their profits are so thin anyway that there just aren't enough employees available to pick up, dispose of refuse and still be a profit making commercial partner in the global scheme of things, including the environment. So, somebody has to PAY.

Remember, you the customer, purchased the wrappers and boxes to get the food you require and this is a way for McDonalds, to help you fulfill "your" responsibility to the environment, and also be a profitable answer to their need, as a good partner in that global scheme of things.

So see, in my opinion, your PAYING the additional TAX, for yet another privilege of being the disposer, of all of that great McDonalds food", and garbage.

Do the math Correctly- there is no such thing as take out tax

AUTHOR: Charlene - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, October 29, 2005
2.19-1.09=1.10+your .09 tax that you calculated comes to 1.19. The Take Out Tax is because it was drive thru therefore to go-take out rather than for here-commonly Dine in or Eat in Tax. The problem there was not in the tax itself it was in the wrong coupon being used-or programmed incorrectly and unless that was the programmer of the button for the coupon- they most likely were not going to realize the error in the coupons promotional price versus the button for the coupon and the price it came to after using the button obviously not one dollar rather 1.10 which could be a human mistake of not adjusting the button for differnces in price from the suggested corporate pricing. And no I do not work for McDonalds I did when I was younger, but not any longer I couldn't put up with the low pay, and having to deal with the people you just can't please, you don't get paid enough. You are one of the people I used to hate, but now I can see your point because it wasn't the price the coupon stated but I would have thought you were an idiot thinking there was a take out tax when the math at the beginning proves you had calculated the tax correctly but were missing the subtraction and addition.
