Possible Scam

Merchants Credit is in the business of buying antiquated uncollectible debts. They are junk debt dealers. It is possible that this debt is not yours or it could be that it is a debt that is so old you don't remember. Either way, you can't ignore them. Just like Alex in Fatal Attraction - they will not be ignored.

First thing, pull your credit reports from all three credit bureaus. Don't be surprised if you find this item on your report.

Do not converse with these people on the phone. You will only be aggravated - ask that all communications be done by mail. If you have gotten a letter from them or a call from them regarding a bill (and it is either not your bill or an old bill) do the following: If it not your bill send a letter disputing any responsibility of this item as well as request them to validate the debt; 2. If it is your bill and it is old check your state's SOL laws and respond with a standard SOL letter.

Now if you find that they have reported this incorrect information on your credit report, then there is a letter that you will need to send to the credit bureaus and to Merchant. I will be glad to email that one to you.

I hope this helps.

Lisa
