Merchants Credit Guide Co these people sent me a letter trying to collect a debt from supposedly from 1986-91 who knows exactly what date!!! Ripoff Chicago Illinois

I received a letter from these people dated June 26, 2006. They claim they bought my account from a company called Pinnacle who bought it from someone called Intrust Bank. I incurred this debt anywhere from 1986-1991. Guess what I checked my credit report today, and on my credit report these people have checked my credit, but, for the last 15 years my credit has been pretty spotless. Do they scare and intimidate me ? Sure they do ! If they can mess with my credit report it scares me.
What can I do ? Does anyone know ? My bank doesn't carry records of my checks that far back so I can't prove I paid it off. Am I At their mercy ?
Can someone out there tell me what to do ? Can they collect a debt that far back ? Especially one that I'm not even sure what it is.
I called them & stayed on the phone 20 minutes before I called back and told the secretary I was fixing to call the police because I am suspect fraud , I was connected right away & told to send a certified letter that they would put in dispute until then.

First of all, NEVER speak to any third party collector on the phone. Do a search on this site which will give you access to the many solutions in my posts alone. Then fo to the ftc.gov website and read/print the FDCPA.
Merchants Credit Guide Co are JUNK DEBT BUYERS. They buy a debt of this age and type for about 1/10th of a penny on the dollar, or less.
It is totally uncollectable, and they know it. They just hope that you don't know it.
As soon as they put any negative entry on your credit for this type of uncollectable debt, you are entitled to be paid.
Just send the CEASE COMMUNICATIONS letter to them certified/rrr and you will never hear from them again.
