Merchants' Credit Guide ripoff - The above company is trying to take me for $3,179.30. Have no knowledge of account. Chicago Illinois

Merchants' Credit Guide Co./CFB Financial LLC is trying to get me in the amount of $3,179.30. They are saying that the original account was with BANK ONE/COMMERCIAL CREDIT. After 3 phone calls to the telephone number on the correspondence from the above company, I still don't know anymore than I did when I received the letter. The last payment on the account was supposedly made in 1999. No one could tell me what the account was for or when the account was originally taken out.

To the best of my knowledge I have never had an account with any of the companies involved. I was given a great deal; if I paid them $1,000.00 I would receive a letter stating that the account was paid in full. But if I wrote a letter disputing the claim that would void any discounts offered to settle the account.

I tried to get telephone numbers for Bank One or Commercial Credit. They are both now Chase. Running into brick walls every way I turn.

I would appreciate any help I can get to take care of this mess.
