I tried to put a bought and paid for disc into my XBox 360 yesterday and found I was suspended for not providing Xbox Live with a credit card so that they could charge me without my express permission in the amount of $59.99 for a years worth of service I do not want, do not use, and did not agree to.
This is not the first time Microsoft XBox live has done shady business practices with me personally but the second time stings too much to be quiet and pay...again. What they do is allow you to very easily sign up to XBox Gold membership with a button press, then hide a clause in the EULA (that is not displayed on XBox) that gives them permission to automatically charge you for a years worth of XBox Live service (non-refundable, whether you actually use the service at all.) It is completely invisible to you when signing up because this is NOT done from a computer.
So if and when the expiration date rolls around on your account, suddenly all of the digital downloads of games over years become unusable unless you give in to them and give them a credit card they can charge. These games are not cheap, usually $50+ each, and the additional content and expansions downloaded for the varying titles owned are also currently unusable.
Let me also state that this is done from a console device, and literally has no affiliation with a computer but the cancellation method is PC only. Yet when I visit the official website www.xbox.com, login to my account, and then click on "My Account" as they suggest for this. I get: "Uh oh.. It appears you have found a glitch." and it spits out 4 lines of random letters/numbers below it like some kind of error code nightmare. I have been running around in this deliberate circle on their site now for 2 days.
I submitted a very clear, very detailed request on the Support forums section (since all of their "Contact Us" methods do not work or function properly) and 24 hours later I received what appeared to be a scripted auto-response not pertaining to anything I had requested or mentioned in my message. Instead it stated (in a private message) that my message was irrelevant and would not be posted to the forums.
Upon searching for a way to fix my suspended account, since you cannot do it from XBox, and cannot do it from www.xbox.com I found tens of thousands of same & similar complaints, blogs, forums, youtube videos, etc.. This is an absolute rip off from a giant corporation thats making a fortune off of this very well thought out, and deliberate trap!
I do not play online games, stream movies, or do multiplayer of any kind on any xbox game that requires a gold membership. This is not a service I want or agree to. Yet apparently it is required if I want to use any of the games I have bought for full retail price (both hard copy & digital) for an estimated total of about $1500.00.
