I too worked for National Health Care Discount (NHCD) for about 3 months after finding them on Hotjobs.com. I'd checked them out through the BBB and found them to be very legitimate. After 2 months I'd gone through 2 different managers who seemed to quit due to mistreatment by other managers. My third manager was helpful but I knew I wouldn't be staying much longer. I'd heard that "Grant", who runs the company, didn't seem to really care about all his "little people (managers)" bickering over whatever.

By my 3rd month I'd applied to receive my $69 deposit back. After two weeks I received it and finally quit. I'd heard/read of others who did not receive their deposit back but it seemed like those people quit BEFORE they asked for their deposit back. I waited on mine, THEN quit. I even called my manager to resign.

I somewhat enjoyed working for NHCD but did not find the pay fully satisfying. I also could not bear recruiting other people by telling them about all the awesome income potential when there isn't any. I have learned of other people who worked for NHCD and spent these ridiculous amount of hours per week to make about $50 per month - roughly the same amount I was making working very little hours. In 3 months I made a mere $154.

Bottom line is: it's a lot of work, plus all the classes and meetings you have to attend and the pay sucks. When you become a recruiter, you pretty much lie to people about the job you are filling and the income potential. Plus, you'd be trying to hire "telemarketers" for a job that the FTC and Congress will almost wipe out with the new No-Call Registry that will be in place by the end of this year.

I have 2 girls and a great husband and found NHCD to be a waste of my time and my family's. I myself was not actually "ripped off" but I've spoken too/heard about/read about other people who have. Even though the company seemed legitimate, working from home for NHCD did NOT benefit me at all.

Jobs!! :)

AUTHOR: Karley - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 27, 2003

I posted the names of the main jobs I do you could probably pull them up on a search engine. I found them through a great group of ladies on www.wahm.com and go to the telecommuting message boards. They definately will let you know what is a scam and what is not, and they always share new jobs leads. :) You can find me on there as well as Mommie2Mady.

Best Wishes!!

Definite Thank You to Karley

AUTHOR: Angie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 27, 2003

I also would like to thank Karley for sharing your experience with NHCD. I made many friends also working for them. I still keep in close contact with my first two managers including a few people from my original team. When I began working for NHCD I always heard or read about negative comments, but I just could not understand it since this truly seemed like legitimate means of extra income. But now I know! I have a friend from my original team who is still working for NHCD. She made it to a leads manager position and held it there for about a month while still doing recruiting. It wasn't long before she knew she was going nowhere fast. The last time I talked to her she was looking elsewhere for a work-at-home job to get out of NHCD. And when my second manager quit she emailed everyone copies of her paycheck stubs to show how little she was making for working over 50 hours per week. I was shocked! She is constantly emailing everyone, including myself, links to websites that offer work-from-home jobs with NO FEES! There ARE jobs like this available, it's just a matter of looking really good. And yes, it would be awesome Karley, if you could share some of those available jobs with us. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for this information. someone called me from NHCD and something told me not to go with them. After reading this, I am very glad I didn't!! I almost did!! It sounds like a nightmare!! Anyhow, Karley, I read your letter and was very impressed. I am looking for a legitimate job to work at home, but just can't find anything. You mentioned that you knew some jobs at home that might be legitimate where you don't have to pay a fee. I hope you don't mind that I bring this up, but I want to know where I could find some legitimate work at home jobs too.

Thanks again,

Not Disgruntled

AUTHOR: Karley - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, May 23, 2003

Okay to address your first issue, my husband works full time with the Oregon Air National Guard, no different than someone who works active duty. He is a cop and an E-5 as well. He holds AGR status. If you want to tell me you make more than 2000 a month just with NHCD(because my husband makes over 2000 a month), and only be a recruiter, I would believe that if I saw it. I'm not saying you work 50+ hours a week but most of the top 10 managers do. I know this from speaking with them personally and having a dear friend in the top 10, and most of them don't make over 2000 a month.

For your information I worked in leads, and recruiting, then went back and became a lead manager, only because I had an awesome leads manager that I missed while in recruiting, and she is now a GREAT friend of mine. (She is the one good thing that came out of NHCD) You can't say I couldn't cut it in recruiting either, because recruiting is how you build your team. Being a leads manager is NOT the entry level position and you are supposed to make GOOD money as a manager, or atleast thats what they say. I have a list of about 100 past employess of NHCD about half of those held a management positions(in both leads and/or recruiting). They all will tell you the same thing I have said about NHCD, so if a company has that many disgrunteled employees that is VERY SAD!! Another half of those left and went to places like sterling testing systems, cypher services, fast track litigation, and working solutions, where you can do data entry, inbound call center work, background verifications, that includes some of the past managers. You don't have to pay for those jobs, and I honestly can show you pay stubs from these jobs where I come close to equaling my husband's income working 30-35 hours a week, sometimes less depending on the project I'm doing. The jobs pay hourly and not on a crappy commission.

I can give you links as where to find the cards NHCD offers that are free. You can call these places and they will verify that seniors can get the same card for free. You can call the Canadian pharmacies that ship drugs to the US and they will tell you you can get into their mail order programs for FREE!!

If you didn't notice I did mention reporting them to the BBB, however, you pay fees to be a member of the BBB, so they will keep you on as long as you pay the fees, NHCD does have complaints with them though. I can give you information on finding that out too. The FTC in my state is researching NHCD, as well as those who have reported them in many other states.

As far as the training, I was referring to the initial training for leads, the mandatory meeting for recruiting and some of them we had to explain new changes that were mandatory, I'm sure you'll have a few of those. I also have information to the laws on that as well.

What do you think of the gradual increase in the access codes, that are a tax write off? My work uses a 10-10 number that I didn't have to PAY to have set up, because of the fact that it is a TAX WRITE OFF for the COMPANY!!

NHCD does work for some people, but it is about 5% of those who they hire. If you figure the stats you will understand what I mean. The the turn over rate is VERY HIGH!! I know because I was a leads manager. I had lots of reps under me and I can tell you that there is ONE that is still with the company, but has recently started doing one of the jobs listed above and will probably be leaving soon.

Maybe you haven't been with the company long enough to have a clue as to what I'm saying. I was with them for nearly a year, so I think I know what I'm talking about. Again NHCD will work for some people but its probably around 5% of those the 800 hire each week. Others stay even though their income is small, just because they think there are no other legit jobs out there, but there are. Where you don't have to pay. I stayed for so long because I didn't know about other jobs, and I really wanted NHCD to work for me. I loved my managers and wanted to believe what some of them fed me, but I went on to find better paying jobs, where I wasn't calling people at their homes, or lying to them and hiring them just because I wanted to get paid. By the way, I did LOVE my job, until I learned I was ripping people off. I'm sorry but I don't feel good about doing that.

Again, post again when you have been with NHCD for a considerable amount of time and then let us know how you feel.

I have NO reason to lie on a message board

AUTHOR: Cari - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, May 23, 2003

First off in reference to the comment about having to go to meetings and training EVERY week~ I have no idea where you were working at but we have one meeting per week to go to in the recruiting department and any training you go to is totally up to you!

I don't work full time (I only work when my son naps) and I DO make more than my husband does. He is an E-5 in the Air Force. Here's my question... If your husband is in the Air Force too, then why are you living in Oregon? Unless he is a reservist b/c there are not AFB's in OR. That or he is in the ANG and gee if he is... he also can have a 2nd job with that.

If I were having to work 50+ hours per week to make supplemental income I wouldn't be working for ANY company.

If you were in the leads department then you should know already that department is an ENTRY LEVEL POSITION and I don't know many of those positions in ANY company that you can make decent money!

As far as being "lazy" I never said YOU were lazy. Don't take things to heart if they aren't true. Like all jobs not all jobs are right for everyone. And not everyone is right for all jobs. I spoke to some friends and managers about all of this last night and today. The one thing everyone had in common with our conversation was the fact that every company has discruntal employees and negitive comments made about them. Doesn't matter who they are. If you truely had a legit issue with the company why didn't you report them to the BBB or some other federal institution? Enough said. I was just voicing my opinion in the first place when I posted the first message here. I didn't expect to get attacked for having a positive situation about the company. It's not my fault you didn't like or were not right for the job.

Not worth the time!! ..You can make phone calls after phone calls and still not get anywhere.

AUTHOR: Karley - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, May 22, 2003

I was with NHCD for nearly a year, and made it to leads management. My biggest check was about 100 dollars. You can make phone calls after phone calls and still not get anywhere. The lists are recirculated and these poor old people are called repeatedly. In recruiting you'll hire anyone who will pay the deposit and don't say you wouldn't because thats how you get paid. I know I did that part too.

The access code has went from free, to 49.00, to 59.00 and now its at 69.00. I now have a LEGIT job doing background checks and I didn't have to pay a thing for my 10 10 code. It is a tax write off for the company.

My husband is also in the Air Force and I can tell you that to make more than him you need to be in the Top 10 managers, so either your husband makes very little income or your lying. The managers who do make good money also do other things for the company such as advertising or making websites.

As a leads manager I can tell you the turn over rate is very high. They hire around 800 a week and only maybe 5-10% of those people will move on with the company and from there only another 5% will stay with the company for any length of time. I too, was blinded by the company and it was because I felt IT was the ONLY legit job so I wanted to believe in the company. However, I have learned that there are legit work at home jobs, where you don't have to pay and you certainly don't have to rip people off.

The only good part to the company was the support I received. I know even some of the managers who have been there for 2 years have asked me what I do from home and wanted to leave NHCD because you have to work 60+hours a week to make even a livable income, and thats after 2 years of working to build your team. I did make a few good friends that I will cherish forever, but they know why I left the company, and are in the top 10 managers so are making good money and have no reason to leave yet. However, NHCD is always looking for a way to slowly rip you off and the managers agree, I have been in conference calls with them and heard it all.

To top everything off, you can get the cards they offer for free, including the Canadian program. If you enjoy ripping off seniors go for it, but think of how you would feel if someone did that to your grandmother.

Response to Rebuttal

AUTHOR: Angie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, May 22, 2003

An update/addition to the rebuttal by "Cari"........I was NOT a lazy employee of NHCD. I worked full time including every other weekend. I had so many ad calls (literally 100 at a time). Right before I quit a lot of those numbers were duplicates, disconnected or wrong numbers (resulting in more ad calls to replace the "bad" ones). And those people I did reach learned about the new FTA/Congress no-call registry that will be in place by the end of this year. This made it even more difficult to hire anyone. I spoke with people before meetings/classes that were working OVER 50 hours per week AND weekends with little to no results. If working full time for NHCD and attending EVERY SINGLE class and meeting WEEKLY means you're lazy and don't want to work for NHCD, then I'd say you are right up there with us "lazy" workers and you might as well quit too because apparently that is NOT working hard enough.

NATIONAL HEALTH CARE DISCOUNT IS NOT A SCAM!!!!

AUTHOR: Cari - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, May 21, 2003

I am a current employee of NHCD and I have been nothing but satisfied with them. Yes there is a $69.00 deposit to get your access code but I've hired friends and family members along with myself and none of us have been scammed out of our deposits.

The only way you don't get that money back is if you simply don't work or you don't meet your requirements. Which the required amount of calls can be made in 2 days time!!!

So whoever is getting "scammed" has to be lazy not to be able to make those calls. As far as the pay goes. My husband is in the Air Force and I make MORE han he does! So to the lady who only made 50.00 in a week.

Sorry but that is simply not true. If you were only making that much then you were only working 2-3 hours per week!

I am a recruiter and I give out my home phone number to everyone I hire and in the past 3 months that I've been promoted to this department I've never had anyone call me back, email me, or instant message me with any kind of complaints about me or NHCD! I think these people are just people who needed an excuse not to work!
