November 2008-I was called at work from this man saying I was going to get a diamond watch for being a Visa credit card holder. Then started talking about magazines, and I was so lost because I just wanted to get off the phone, he had me on the phone for over 30 mins! I agreed to a charge of $39.93 which was the lowest he said he could go because I had told him I don't really have money for magazines. So I was mislead into thinking I could get this diamond watch within 2 days after talking to him for just $39.99 and a few magazines (that I thought I could easily cancel later...wrong)

December 2008-A month goes by and nothing in the mail except a confirmation letter. I look at my credit card statement and I had been charged $39.93 but I had gotten nothing for it.

January 2009-I call my credit card company to dispute the charge because I was scammed and charged when I had not received any product or service. I had contacted Nationwide Reader Service and tried canceling my subscriptions. They said I couldn't cancel it because they are tied down to their publisher? And have an agreement with them..? I was like no...I don't want anything to do with you anymore, I haven't gotten any magazines and don't want to receive them, I don't want any diamond watch, and I don't want you to charge my card!
They said the only way to get out of it is to pay my total balance of about $900! I said I had NOT agreed to that. They tried offering me a discount of $700. I said I don't have that kind of money and if you try charging this amount, they will be screwing me over. I was transferred to a supervisor who pretended to be my best friend over the phone saying she can knock down the price to about $200. I said I'd have to call them back. I also started receiving the magazines mid month but am not reading them.

February 2009- I had disputed another $39.93 from my credit card and my credit card company had blocked Nationwide Reader Service from ever charging my account again. They also said this company is under investigation and they would take care of it for me.
So the magazine company calls me back a few times over Jan and Feb asking what's up with my payments. I told them my credit card company had blocked them, but they persisted. It got to the point where they wanted $70.86 back from being disputed, couldn't charge my account, but they were like if you pay us this amount you will never hear from us again. At first I thought it was a good idea because I was fet up, but then I said I'll call you back later. They gave me a number to talk to the supervisor lady again, she said don't listen to those guys in collections who tried to get the $70.86 from you. ?? She said I am the only person that can knock down the price. She also tried getting sassy with me, saying I had JUST given permission to the collections guy to charge my credit card account after i had just said their company was blocked! They try to get any sort of confirmation to get you money! She tried giving me a temporary hold on my account for a month and said she'd call back in March, even made a note of it. Also the magazines are just FLOWING in, I cannot and won't read all these magazines!

Feb 13, 2009- I have been getting phone calls from Nationwide Reader Service for 2 days now but I have been ignoring the calls because I am at work. So this morning around 9am, I get another call and a voicemail. It sounds like a guy that didn't mean to leave a voicemail and is talking to a female in the background.

The voicemail said "OH okay..well she d**n should call back bit**"

I could not believe it! Please avoid any telemarketing scams, they will keep harassing you when you want to opt out of their so called services. I hope they don't come to my house because I live 45 mins from Virginia Beach...

why can't i cancel?

AUTHOR: Recel - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, March 20, 2009

if i buy and shirt i know i can return it if i decide i didn't want it, as long as the tag is still on and it has not been worn.

if i get on to a new cell phone plan i know if i am not satisfied with the service, i can cancel my plan and maybe pay a cancellation fee that i was told of when i first signed the contract.

so why can't i cancel a subscription to magazines that was done over the phone, before anything had been sent to me? i decided you know what, i don't want that diamond watch that didn't come to me when someone said it was going to. i don't want a subscription like 6 different magazines because i wouldn't read all of them.

WHY can't i cancel something so easily?
this company wanted me to pay them $900 to cancel a subscription that i had not even started to get in the mail. when i first gave out my credit card number they did not tell me there was going to be a $900 cancellation fee or that i was going to be tied down to this subscription for 5 YEARS--what??

so now i am getting these magazines, i am telling them to stop sending them to me, and they constantly are calling me to try to get money out of me. how can i stop this? i am not the only one who feels this way.

AUTHOR: Resty - (U.S.A.)

Why would you continue to stay on the phone....on your work time with someone you dont know? Why didnt you hang up? NO one "Forced" you into taking or continuing this call.

Next.......how did they charge your CC or bank account IF you didnt give them the info? Answer:. you smelled what you thought was a too good to be true deal.......a something for nothing situation. AND YA GOT SCREWED......

You claim you were mislead ...no you werent......you though you would get something for nothing. You further state: "(that I thought I could easily cancel later...wrong)
LMAO......your own fault......not theirs.

I didn't give out my work number, I don't do that.
They called my cell phone while I was at work. I happened to be on my lunch break which was why I had time to be on the phone for 30mins.

THE BEST WAY TO HANDLE THIS IS TO TELL THE SCAMMER YOU CAN'T TAKE CALLS AT WORK

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, February 13, 2009

I would report these calls to my boss who can then tell the IT guys to block calls from this particular number.

If your company is too small to have an IT section, then just hang up on the people who call if IT IS NOT RELATED TO BUSINESS.

Somebody has to put that call through to you at work unless you have a direct line outside. Did you fill out one of those "freebie" sites and actually list your REAL phone number? Maybe it was random chance that they happened to just be calling numbers and your work number came up?

If you have a call screener or receptionist at work, I would ask him or her not to put any calls that are not business-related through to me.

And if I am filling out one of those alleged "sweepstakes" entry online which more than likely is just for getting info to spam you and try to hardsell you stuff you don't need --I NEVER WOULD EVEN CONSIDER PUTTING IN MY WORK PHONE NUMBER. That is because if you are getting all these phone calls, it makes you less productive in the eyes of your boss and if you look less productive during these times when employers are going to use any excuse to fire people -- GUESS WHO IS GOING TO GET FIRED?
THE PERSON WHO IS ALWAYS TALKING ON THE PHONE AND NOT WORKING -- THAT'S WHO!

By giving this scum your financial information, not only have you left yourself open for credit card abuse but you have also given him reason to keep calling you and to sell your work number to others who will also call.It will be noted that you responded to a hard sell and that is what the countless others will use on you when they call --and CALL YOU THEY WILL! These scams grow exponentially.

THIS CALLS FOR EXTREME TELEPHONE WARFARE.

THEY CALL YOU AT WORK, YOU HANG UP. LET THEM IDENTIFY THEMSELVES. YOU PICK UP THE PHONE AND DON'T DAY ANYTHING. NOTE THE CALLER ID NUMBER. IF ONE IS NOT LISTED-- HANG UP IMMEDIATELY AND NO NONSENSE.

KEEP ON HANGING UP UNTIL THEY REALIZE THEY CAN'T MAKE A SALE BY CONTINUING TO CALL.

THEY HAVE QUOTAS TO MEET AND I DON"T THINK THEY ARE GOING TO WASTE THEIR TIME ON JUST CALLING ONE NUMBER WHEN THEY HAVE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF CALLS THEY HAVE TO MAKE AND A CERTAIN DEADLINE TO MAKE THOSE CALLS BY.

REMEMBER:

1.LET THEM TALK FIRST, DO NOT IDENTIFY YOURSELF.

2. IF IT IS A TELEMARKETING SOLICITOR, JUST HANG UP!

3.DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER OR CHECKING ACCOUNT NUMBER OR ANY PERSONAL IDENTIFYING INFORMATION ON THE PHONE OR ON THE INTERNET.
TOO MANY SCAMMERS IN THESE HARD ECONOMIC TIMES THESE DAYS.
