G.M is not the only trucks with rusty tailgate support cables. I have a 2001 nissan frontier se. one of the tailgate support cables broke, no load on the tailgate. tailgate was down to save on fuel. Cable broke in the middle. About the only place I can find one is at a nissan dealer for $23.95 highway robbery? Have tried all over the internet to no avail. If anyone else has the same problem contact the nhtsa.dot.gov and file a complaint.

nissan rebuttal... only an Idiot would drive with anything in the bed of a truck with the tailgate down

one only has to roll down the window to feel a little wind resistance on the hand. I suppose no wind can reach the tailgate.
If you think a tailgate down does not matter try putting 6 empty ice coolers in the back tailgate up,check the fuel used compaired with the bed empty, then with the bed empty tailgate down. 2 to 5 miles difference. don't you just hate people that assume?
only an Idiot would drive with anything in the bed of a truck with the tailgate down. no wonder Jerry Springer get's most of his guest from FLA.
OH! with the bed empty tailgate down the nissan truck got 26.4 m.p.g vs 20.7 with the tailgate up.this was checked more than 12 times with close to the same results, some brands of gas did very some. but what does any of this have to do with sorry cable strap quality?

You're wasting your time! Studies have shown riding with the tailgate down does NOTHING for saving fuel! What's worse is people who do this with items in the bed...HOW STUPID!
