Master degree at NCU is ok, but not PhD. PhD tuition is about 70-80% of NCU income. This university has the most PHD students in North America.  By the way, this university is owned by a private equity firm in CT (I guess).

I am with PhD at NCU. At this university, we have to do a breif proposal for disseration (it is called a concept paper, 4 courses of RSH) before completing a comprehensive exam.  Believe it or not, NCU charges $2,400 dissertation fee (at RSH courses) before you register disseration course. If you do not pass the comp exam, you end up pay lot of money ( 4 RSH course tuition plus $2400).

I am sure that at U of Michigan, PHD program starts with coure work, comp exam, and dissertation consecutively.

By the way, if you are in PHD in accounting, you will definitely get a dessertation chair who has Phd in home land security or comp science. If you are in PHD in financial mgmt, your chair might specialize in Criminal justice or HR. You can ensure that your dissertation chair helps you nothing than a grammatic error check on your proposal. .....How do you like this NCU so far? I forgot to tell you that NCU RAMDOMLY chooses a dissertation chair for you (based on year 2010 information I got).

Even worst, 90% of Phd students  who have passed the RSH courses have to register the courses at least 6 times (NCU stadard is 4 times). you know whyyyyy..

The time line per RSH course is 3 months (12 weeks). For example, RSH4 has 9 assignments. If you cannot complete all of them in 3 months you get an F grade and have to reregister it again. If you submit an Assignment1, a mentor will respond within 7-15 days. If you have to correct and resumit the assignment again, you might end up 2 assignments per month. (usually, my mentor responds within 2 days, but at RSH course, he/she HAVE TO respond back at least 7 days becuase this is a university policy. He/she told me that. Anyhow, he/she is no longer with NCU.). At Assignment8 (your chair and 2 committees will go over at your proposal), it takes 20 days for a single respond.  At Assignment8, you have to rewrite it for sure.

Even, your chair and 2 commitees let you pass Assignment8, the NCU review might not let you pass the Assignment9 (assignment 8 and 9 are the same.). This is the failure of NCU system. Most PhD stuck at this process, and it takes 25 days for a single respond (mine takes about 1 month for a single respond). You might end up 9 months for the RSH4 course alone (NCU advertises it for 3 months). You pay for waiting and waiting time. After you reach the maximum courses you can take, NCU will let you pass. However, you have a comprehensive course and 3 disseration courses left to take (it is ok.).

It is not end easily here. You have to take 2 comprehensive courses (maxium is 2 courses allowed.).

Not end yet!!!!!   At DIS courses, there is no limit to take the course, so you take the courses until you complete you dissertation. The vicious same process comes back, the 20-30 days waiting time. You might end up pay 6 DIS courses (NCU advertises 3). This is what Mr. BBB wants.

Finally, you might end up pay 7 courses (21 credits) more and also waste 21 months (3 months a course).  Money is time, and time is money. Many students are ok with this because the goverment (army, police, firefight, state u) pays for their tuition.

Sorry, but not end yet!!!  NCU has high turn over rate in Dean, Mentors, and admin staffs. If you are in dissertation process , and your disseration chair leaves the university. You will have fun with rereviewing and changing your core (methodology) of you paper again.

It is done for now, I am hungry....

If you marry a wrong person, you can get divorce. If you choose a wrong university for PHD, you screw up you life.   Think about that!!!!

I have to disagree

AUTHOR: Reyn - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, April 01, 2014

I am a doctoral student at NCU now.  I hold a BS and MS from the State University of New York and am 20 years in a professional career.  My decision to do my Ph.D. at NCU was based largely in convenience.  I need/want a terminal degree and the Ph.D. in Technological Leadership is one that is acceptable in my field.

While I have sometimes been concerned that a couple of the NCU courses were not sufficiently rigorous to be courses at the doctoral level - self-guided learning is expected in all post-graduate courses.  I am just entering my 8th course at NCU.  Courses are 8 weeks each.  I have only had one professor one time who did not respond within 3 days of any submission.  My advisor is very supportive and helpful and all faculty with whom I have dealt have either been full time and tenured at another institution or worked full time for NCU.  I find that to be comparable to faculty at any reasonable insitution.

The author of the original piece, it seems to me, either expected a diploma mill (pay your money, take your Ph.D.) or a glorified undergraduate education where your hand is held throughout.  That is not the nature of post-graduate study, it simply isn't.

I do understand that the complaint may have come out of frustration, and possibly out of a lack of skill in English (my guess is that the writer was an ESL speaker - at least given the error rate and the fact that he was a post-graduate student, I hope so) and I can see that a writing intense course of study in English could be very discouraging, but the complaint simply doesn't ring true as far as its statements of supposed fact.

Regards.

Reyn

Everything stated is the truth and nothing but the truth. NCU suckers you in and make you take more and more courses while always raising the costs. Not to mention the employer turn over rate!! You are always dealing with new people who have no clue.

Many Lies- (A current student replies

AUTHOR: Golden - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, March 20, 2011

I took classes through NCU  in 2003-2004, and 2009 to present (3/2011) I am not saying that NCU is the best but the person who complained does not seem to be a student based on the person's writing skills.  Yes, the board who runs the school does seem to have money as the only motive. Yes, they had been charging the dissertation fee in advance, which I also felt ripped off, then they "claimed' to include it in the new all-comprehensive tuition plan which began Jan, 2011.

As in most higher level schools, you teach yourself anyway. I have had very good mentors (instructors). To me, the school is challenging, not a diploma mill and too high as all school are, as far as I am concerned. (Taken classes at about 10 colleges over 40 years) The person who filed the original report did not tell you that you could, at that time qualify for a 30 day extension, which is no longer effective 01/01/2011.

I know nothing about registering for a course 5-6 times. This is a lie. Mentors are generally to submit your work back to you in 5 days and most do it quicker. The school DOES NOT  let you stay in any one course for 9 months.
I believe whoever wrote this complaint is/was NOT a student and has very POOR  writing skills.   Also the person is a LIAR!

This is true, many mentors have come and gone!
