oDesk gets your Paypal and credit card information and then their vendors run up huge bills and when you try to close the account they tell you have to pay them first. A vendor ran up $5,000 in hours and they are in Hungry. Odesk pulled the money from our account and refused to refund it. We called them, literally, 25 times, and they never did a thing, every time telling us a supervisor would call us back and a "ticket" would be created.
They suck!!! $5,000 poorer we finally called the Colorado State Attorney General and they contacted Gary Swart who still did nothing. Gary Swart should go to jail!!!
Never, ever use oDesk or give them any credit card, bank or Paypal information unless you want your accounts emptied.

I am a small internet company, and use oDesk for all my contracting needs, oDesk is not responsible for those charges the contractor has billed. However if you filed the dispute with them right as soon as the funds were withdrawn - they had pleanty of time to prevent the funds from being paid out to the contractor.
My contractors tell me they don't receive payment instantly they say they normally receive the funds on Wednsday's. Meaning oDesk has 4-5 days to figure something out.
There are security settings that you have set when creating the contract to hire the contractor.
1. Set limit of hours able to work a week
2. Max budget amount for set contract/project
It sounds like this contractor was not using the odesk time tracking application (time clock)
and manually added his time right at the last minute.
* Now I am sure 90% of odesk disputes are because of the contractor manually adding time to there time card, and yes as the employer it is not fair, and when you try disputing the manually added time you have to jump through many hoops before you even get to file the dispute.
