The Assistant manager of the store refused to honor my new $25 gift card that was given to me for Christmas. He stated that the computer refused the gift card and gave absolutely no remedy to solve the problem. He insisted that I give him my home phone number and when I refused, he told me that the computer would not accept the gift card. I never give my home phone number to auto parts stores (including O'Reilly's) and they always find a way to take my cash or credit card.

When I gave him cash for the exact same item, he took the cash with no problems but complained that I would have no warranty on the purchase. I told him that if there was a problem, I would have my receipt and return the product.

The item I purchased was an air filter for a small car. It was not a custom air filter or anything special and the purchase price was about $18

Nowhere on the gift card is it stated that the card is not valid unless home phone numbers are provided.

I wonder why my cash works at O'Reilly's but gift cards are refused.

These people are rip-off artists. I will not go back to any O'Reilly's again. It is quite a shame since I spend a lot of money on auto parts every year.

The gift card needs to be activated to have a value

AUTHOR: Edward - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 20, 2008

I believe that O'reilly Auto Parts, Auto Zone, Advance, Walmart, Walgreens, and most any other place that has gift cards, sell a generic gift card. Each gift card has a very long UPC bar code as well as longer than usual set of numbers under the bar code. The gift cards are activated at the cash register. At the register is where the amount of the card value is activated. Where I work, as well as other large retailers, I see the gift cards hanging everywhere. All the time customers come up to the register and claim that they were given the card as a gift. When the cards are sold, a receipt is given with the card.

Also, they do not charge tax on the sale of the gift card, the tax is charged on taxable products when the card is used. It is more likely that the card you gave for your purchases had not been ran through the register, activated, or paid for yet. You said that it was a gift. I would suggest that you get the receipt from the person that gave it to you. It will show the entire card number and activation code. It most likely gave a prompt as it does where I work. On the register screen, it posts that the card has not been activated and has no value. It would be silly of any business to have gift cards that have a real value just laying around. It would be the same as just laying money around the store and hope no one takes it.

Perhaps you should go back when there's a store manager on duty.
