We had cellular service through AT&T in late 2002 and early 2003. During this time, we experienced nothing but problems and headaches trying to get AT&T to live up to their end of the contract by providing decent service; we were unable to use our phone in a number of location within blocks of our home, and hit roaming almost immediately when leaving our neighborhood, which of course racked up quite a bill.
After paying the exhorbitant bills for a few months, we decided to break our contract with AT&T, informing them upfront that we would not be paying the fee they felt entitled to as they had not lived up to their end of the contract by providing us with service (unusable service is no service at all, is it??).
AT&T then sold our debt to Palisades. We have informed them numerous times that we have no intention of paying the full amount of the bill for the reasons explained to AT&T. Now, after more than four years, they've decided they will take us to court for the amount owed, which is nearly $600 even though the fee to break the contract with AT&T was $300. They've decided this after all this time, I feel certain, because we need the debt cleared off our credit report to buy our new home - after all, it had been a couple of years since we'd heard anything from them and were told the debt was written off.

There debt may indeed still be valid. Just because a company "charges off" a debt does not mean the debt isn't owed, or that it cannot be collected.
You should check the statute of limitations for a CONTRACT in your state. In NY State, it's 6 years. Sounds to me that they will go to court to get a money judgement against you. Once they have a judgement, the statute of limitations usually goes up - in NY it's 20 years.
