#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

More to the story

AUTHOR: Hoohaw - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, May 28, 2009

As a previous employee of PEMCO Insurance, I can say that there is most likely a whole lot more to this story than what the homeowner is summarizing here.

Insurance, in the state of Washington, is a heavily-regulated industry. As such, the company is required to file with the Office of the Insurance Commissioner how it rates policies and underlying criteria utilized to determine such rate. PEMCO's committment to its policy holders is to be selective regarding the type of risk that it will allow on its book of business. Added risk equates to added rate.

Typically, homeowners have a very low frequency of claims. When a particular homeowner has a higher-than-average number of claims, the policy is more carefully scrutinized. Obviously, the policy-holding group would like to maintain a very low claim incident rate in order to maintain a low rate for the group premiums.

There are a lot of things that this poster is not explaining: Have they had other claims with other companies previous to PEMCO? What type and severity of claims are we talking about? Was there any willingness on the part of the homeowner to make necessary improvements or changes that would prevent future claims from occurring? Where do they live? What type of structure is it? Was there negligence involved? Is there other activity on premises; business, farming, etc?Was there other circumstances involved; door unlocked, unsupervised child, dog attack, etc? I can assure you, that as a policy, PEMCO does not "drop" policyholders without reason. Furthermore, PEMCO is one of the only companies - which I am aware of - that will actually regard a person as more than a statistic. Most companies underwriting guidelines are completely stringent; unwilling to grant exceptions based upon circumstance. PEMCO really does take into consideration, as much as possible, the unique "personal" side of each situation.

I understand why this person would feel like they were angry over being dropped. I also feel that they have an obligation to provide the rest of the story surrounding the reasoning behind the decision. Personally, I do not have a stake in the outcome either way. Presently, I don't even work in the insurance field. I don't understand the hype...just because you get dumped by one insurance company doesn't preclude you from obtaining it elsewhere. Sometimes the relationship doesn't work out. Hey, it's a free country. What I've found is that other insurance is out there, but the new company will want to rate for the risk. Since the risk is higher (based upon the frequency and nature of claims), the rate will most likely be higher too. This "high-risk" market is one that PEMCO does not currently offer.
