Last time I rented a car from Hertz, I took a HUGE bag of quarters with me, because I knew I would be taking a side trip with a toll road.

My (adult) daughter sat by me on the short trip and fed me quarters for the toll booths, which seemed to pop up every mile.

Several weeks later, a mystery charge of 11.33 appeared in my bank account. I looked up what this "Plate Pass" was. I was furious! After all that hassle of pulling on and off the toll road to stop at every single toll booth!!!

I refuted the claim, and the bank took it off. However, Plate Pass somehow got the bank to take the money out again.

We looked at the original rental agreement, and this rip-off company is buried in the fine print on page 3. They can--without your explicit permission--debit your credit card whenever they want, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Oh wait, you can send them the receipts as proof. And who gets receipts on vacation? Especially when you innocently are doing what you think is right? You can bet the next time I rented a car I kept every single receipt (not that I'll ever rent from Hertz again).

They basically told me that I was a liar, that all those toll booths were "automatic." My daughter was with me and can verify that we stopped at every stupid toll booth and paid. It doesn't matter! Plate Pass can do what they want, and you have no recourse.

I know it's just a small amount of money, but I am an honest, law-abiding person, and I can't believe that you can do the right thing and still get ripped-off like this.

I am just so incredibly angry that a company can get away with this.
