I applied to the Political Call Center (aka P.C.C.) after years of seeing it advertised as a great place to work. I applied, tested and was hired on a Wednesday to start the following Monday.
I came in on Monday and went right into training. I recognized several people from other call centers in which I had been previously employed . One of my supervisors had been a supervisor at another call center. Training went smoothly and I was put on the call center floor to make calls.
I got off to a shaky start but got into a stride where I started making a few "sales" where I got some donations. The script was very wordy and my vocal cords began to get worn out. My first project was a "right to life" campaign. On my second day I added another campaign for the Republican Party. The script for this campaign was just as wordy and my throat began to get very tired.
Part of the screen showed how I was doing in relation to the rest of the group. Several times on my first two days I was in the top 10 in the center. "I'm doing very well" I thought.
On my third day things changed. My voice wasn't as strong and it showed in my sales volume. I wasn't getting any sales and by mid afternoon I was in the training room talkiing to a trainer. She seemed to put me at ease and said everything would be all right.
At 4:30 pm I was told to come into the training room. This is where I was told by the same trainer that my numbers were "not looking good" and that my employment was being terminated.
I have learned over the years that if one is being fired in Arizona the best procedure is not to argue about the termination. This is an "at will" state and there is just simply no challenging a firing. Just get out and go home then go on with your life.
I was told that I would be paid for the hours I worked at $7.80 an hour (minimum wage in Arizona). As yet I haven't seen the check in my mailbox. I was able to go back to my old job and pick up where I left off.
As for the Political Call Center being a "scam center" I think it is. The main campaigns are vague and the websites are just as vague. As for call center representatives calling only senior citizens I was calling a mix of people (older, middle aged and younger). I got a LOT of wrong numbers, disconnected numbers and the like but those were easily removed.
Obviously I was hurt by being let go after only three days. I would have liked a week to prove myself. Some people have good days and bad days.
This call center needs to be investigated by whatever agency regulates call centers, especially one as politically and socially involved as this one.
