Both torsion springs broke on our garage door. Husband called Precision Door Repair and asked for a quote to replace them. They told him 54.95 for the service call, and between $60 and $135 for the springs. All total we calculate that the job would be less than $200 so he sets up the appointment.

The technician came out the next day, and informed my husband that the cost of repair has doubled. They were charging us $138 PER SPRING. Total bill: $363.00. Luckily for the technician, I was not home or I would have told him forget it. According to my research - those springs are in the range of $20 - $50 a piece if I were to purchase them, PDS surely pays much less for them through their vendor.

Also - they KNEW that they were only quoting for one spring, because you can't just replace ONE spring - even if the other is broken, you can't have one old spring and one knew one. That is standard practice. I called around to other places and got quotes ranging from $125 - $225. Now - granted we should have called around to other places BUT the price PDS quoted did not seem unreasonable or high over the phone.

I believe that is the way they conduct their business, quote low on the phone, then when the tech gets to your house - it goes way up. I shot off a nasty email to them and have a feeling that won't make much of an impact. I do intend on contacting their headquarters - if it exists, and taking this as far as I can. Now I'm worried that if the springs should fail, if a warranty will even be in effect. Oh - and by the way, the bill could have been $600 if my husband would have agreed to the complete service he suggested.

I will update and post the company's response - if I get one.
