A judgment is different from a collections account

If you have a judgment showing on your credit report, that probably means that you have an actual judgment in the public records against you.
The very first thing to do is go to the public records section of your county and look for any and all judgments you have in your name. If you have a judgment get a copy of the entire file. The judgment can last from 10 to 20 years, it is different in each state. Check your state's statutes to find out how long your judgment can last and if it can be renewed. By the way, the judgment collects statutory interest for every day that it has been in place so it can quickly add up to be a much larger amount than the face amount.
When you have a copy of your judgment you will be able to see who was the original creditor that obtained the judgment against you. It may or may not be valid. You will need to do some research to find out if the original debt was your debt. The issue is this: whether or not the original debt was your debt, the judgment (if you have one against you) is against you. So you need to take steps to either get the judgment vacated or paid and a Satisfaction recorded.
Research the various reputable credit sites like debtorboards(dot)com or creditinfocenter(dot)com to find out what specific steps you need to take to clear the judgment from your name. Once it is cleared off the public records you can then remove it from your credit report.
The collections agency that is contacting you now may or may not be authorized to collect on the judgment, but that is a separate issue altogether. Deal with the actual judgment first.
