Received a letter in the mail saying exactly as previous report from this company on August 11th, which included a check in the amount of $4,997.00 to be used to pay for any fees or taxes and to be deposited immediately after speaking with claims agent Mr. Larry Gillenwater at 1-866-431-6506, ext.1.
Was initially excited, but then skeptical as these things don't happen to people like me. Called Readers Digest as their name appeared in the letter.
After three days of research they returned email message saying it was not one of theirs.
Proceeded to call numbers in letter given and received only one word upon connecting "Good-Bye". Tried to call the IRS number given of 1-514-583-6458(Canadian number)to get validation/verification number and got a male voice saying that I had reached the offices of the IRS and their hours of operation, that I was to leave a detailed message and would be contacted by an agent as soon as possible. I left my name, phone number and the claim number. Never heard back from them to this date.
Reporting to you as this is my first run in with a scam and I don't want to go through the ups and downs again. It is also good to note your site was the only one to tell of this and I wanted to contribute my two cents worth to help others. It has taken me over a week to find out, my time of claiming prize was running low and I wanted to make sure I had really done all I could to make a legitimate claim or a scam complete. I am glad I did not get the latter!

Original Date of Contact, August 11th, 2008
Update: today, August 27th, 2008
Today was contacted by a person who claims to be the Director, Mr. Robert Pouncy from Toronto, Canada. Asked if I had been in contact with Mr. Gillenwater and when I told Mr. Pouncey what had happened when calling the number in the letter for Mr. Gillenwater he seemed confused and hesitant. I also informed him that I had contacted Readers Digest and they had no information of this Sweepstakes he said that was due to the fact that the funds were being held in Canada and the direct companies involved would not be aware of them. He said to deposit the cashiers check that had been sent to me and call him as soon as this was done for further instructions. He also said that this check would be used to pay the IRS taxes of Canada as this was where the money would be distributed from and I would then not be paying any US IRS taxes on the $500,000.00 prize.
I also informed him that I had called the IRS number in the letter and what the outcomes of those calls were. He was again confused and repeated the aforesaid instructions. Said good bye and congratulations and God Bless and hung up.
